    Double accent???

As far as I knew, Russian words had one accent in them.

But in the word "пережил", in this book i have, the accent marks are given in two places:

    пережил

    What is up with that?

    Thanks

    It's two words:
    пЕрежил outwear
    пережИл survive

There are some Russian words that depending on the accent change their meaning

I strongly believe it's only one word. "To survive" or "to outlive". It has two acceptable stresses, and it happens sometimes in Russian.

Exactly. "I survived many tragic events and many people", and I think you could put the stress on the first syllable as well: пЕрежил.

No it's not one word. No way.
ПЕрежил is about переживАния. It's about psychical. ПережИл is more related to physical.

You cannot say Он пЕрежил свою жену.

That's how I feel it. Of course I will not press the point.

I have peeped into my explanatory dictionary and found the only one variant of pronunciation for all meanings. It's пережИть.

Ртём, yes, but... you can't go by the infinitive, not by a long shot.

пережить is the infinitive for both of those verbs. One of them follows the normal accent pattern, and the other goes by the old pattern, which is "stress on the first syllable" sort of like "на землю" where stress is on the first syllable -- на.

Rtyom's explanation is the only correct one. Indeed, we're talking about different words here. Good parallel in German (for the enlightened ones): ein

I tell ya, things like that really date me. I suppose you guys say родился... instead of родился, родилась, родилось, родились.

I was just looking in my 1960 edition of Аванесов/Ожегов Русское литературное произношение и ударение. Don't tell me на руку, за руку, and под руку are gone too! =:^0

родился, родилась, родилось, родились sound affected. I can imagine a вшивый интеллигент в очках say that.

Or what about дома... дома ?

No need to get so technical. Its two diffrent words.
Вот это да, я так люблю себя. И сегодня я люблю себя, ещё больше чем вчера, а завтра я буду любить себя to ещё больше чем сегодня. Тем что происходит,я вполне доволен!
