    by whom is it considered to be? It was said by some high respectable historicans, that there are only 3 countries in the world which were independent during last 500 years - England, Russia and Switzerland, so this holiday is kind of political game and actually this day can't be a holiday coz Russia lost many her territories, and we celebrate this "great" event...

    They are not different states, but different forms of one state. Soviet union was my country, Russia is my country. Name has changed, so what?

    Though we don't really need some of these territories, there's nothing to celebrate, I agree.

    Ah, I see, then you have a point here. But we can say that Russia became independent from other republics (one can argue about its sense but formally we can say so ).

    Seriously, Russia was never dependent from other soviet republics, wasn't she?

    Of course, it was because Russia was a part of Union. Another question, why Russia was a part nevertheless the Russia has all of them before 1917.
