That's because you're a citizen of Russia. A citizen of, say, Ukraine would say only the first part of your sentence.

Ah, I see, then you have a point here. But we can say that Russia became independent from other republics (one can argue about its sense but formally we can say so).

Seriously, Russia was never dependent from other soviet republics, wasn't she?
Of course, it was because Russia was a part of Union. Another question, why Russia was a part nevertheless the Russia has all of them before 1917.
