It is interesting for me - in the Europe and in America really are there people who think that's in Russia half of people communists, KGB, on the streets goes bears , and people sit on stove/oven/furnace/kiln (??) and eat caviar?

I would actually say yes. If you ask the average joe in the street, he would call Russians for communists and suspect them for spying for KGB. They would be to ignorant to think whether bears exist in Russia or not...

My manager, and he is our deputy program director (a big-wig in our corporation) told me himself that russians are pink commie bastards.

Americans are ignorant.

Then maybe you're just hanging out with ignorant people. I don't know anybody who thinks they're "communist." I don't think the whole bear angle is nearly as exotic here in the US -- compared to the Europe, perhaps. We have plenty of our own bears, so it doesn't really hold the exotic appeal of something like kangaroos, pandas, crocodiles, etc.

What you will find are people who are, yes, not generally well-versed in contemporary Russian politics (but then, who really is?) but are very suspicious of the current regime. The intelligence angle isn't entirely invalid, given both a)the great number of siloviki in high places right now and b)the high level of espionage that still takes place by both sides. But of course, the bulk of Russian and American tourists/businessmen aren't playing that game.

And really, the most dominant place for any of this stuff is still movies. Russian mafia, rogue KGB agents, and evil communist dictators make for entertaining plots.

Oh, and your boss may be a douche, but I doubt that he really, truly believes that Vova is General Secretary of the KPR. Much more likely is he's just trashtalking. I'm really just shocked that he didn't throw in a "drunk" or "vodka-chugging" into his brash stereotype... Besides, he needs to get his terminology right: it's commie-pinko bastards...

But you gotta admit, the majority of the american population think KGB still exists...

Whenever I tell people that a lot of the people (i.e. most old people) I talked to in Russia thought things were better in the Soviet Union they are always shocked.

These old people you are talking about lived in strictly isolated society with ideology that immensely differs from Western one. Most of them truely believed in ideas of communism and they had compelling reasons for that.
In their opinion in the last century xSU turned from mostly agricurtural state to very power superstate that challanged US and they did it on their on without any foreign help (or rather under permanet pressure of Western countries and the US). They had free education and healthcare, social and gender equity. And now they are abandoned in poverty by their state and told that all their beliefs is just rubbish.
It's hard to change one's values when one is 70-80 and we shouldn't detest or deride them. They are people belonging to their times.

Read my post properly. I didn't say that I found it suprising. I fully understand why people thought life was better back then. Especially old people. Although "social and gender" equality is debatable. Officialy they did, yes.
