So will Snowden be alive in 3 years from now?
Will he need protection from the security services in Russia?
Will he be able to walk the streets freely?

Even if the CIA doesn't come after him, there are probably thousands of shady figures i Russia who'd poke Snowden with a poisoned umbrella or whatever, for a million dollar.... or "accidently" run him over as he crosses the street! There are a million possibilities.... "Oh dear who could have guessed that he had an aneurism and was doomed to die at 31"....

Or am I exaggerating? Can the US admit that they win some and lose some.....

Well, since there are papers like this one, things can't be that bad. Plus anyone can go online and bitch as much as they like. Also, Russia doesn't make itself out to be the big champion of freedom of speech and human rights on the planet, unlike certain other countries.
So there'd a lot less of hypocrisy if it was revealed that Russia was doing this (and I genuinely don't think it is - I think they focus on real problems, not what people search for on google or email to their friends.

However, if Russia is spying on citizens in a similar way, IT MUST BE REVEALED.
And if the whistleblower has to flee to America, or anywhere else, so be it!

Of course it's spying, everyone knows about it here but no one gives a flying f##k.
Please, correct my mistakes, except for the cases I misspell something on purpose!

Wouldn't you care if it was done, and used against you, or somebody you know? If you were denied a job for security reasons without any further details given.. Or if you got pulled out of your bed in the middle of the night because you had made some dramatic statement on a radical website? Or just because someone else under suspicion sent you a few emails or was your friend on a social network.

Anyway; it requires an absolutely spectacular commitment in terms of cost. America has been doing this for years. I think it was 2006 that the first limited evidence was revealed, when the NSA had an interception point at the backbone internet cables somewhere in California.
Whereupon everybody in IT realised that there was something big going on... until NSA started building the biggest computer hall on the universe essentially, for data storage quickly followed by Snowden's revelations.

In the UK, everyone in IT knew about the Menwith Hill spying central only the exact purpose was a bit shady. Now we know that the worst suspicions are true.

Sweden has a programme like this, going back many years, but was open about it from day one and there was plenty of debate and demonstrations. Nevertheless think it's revolting, but at least they didn't lie about it.

I think that if Russia was doing something on a scale near what the UK or USA are doing, then somebody would have felt obliged to publish it.
Online, or in foreign press or whatever, but it would have come out.

Wired's awesome and extremely interesting article that everybody in the USA / EU / NATO absolutely should read

Apparently they figured out how to decrypt 128 bit encryption on the fly (?!!) so VPN will do you no good if you want privacy. Only TOR.

It is as good as revealed in this Wikipedia article: "Для непосредственно прослушивания разговоров решение суда официально требуется, но для получения другой информации (например, о фактах совершения вызовов) санкции суда не требуется.

I hope you can appreciate this turn of phrase -- "решение суда официально требуется" instead of "требуется решение суда".

Snowden, Greenwald and Wikileaks are winning - Opinion - Al Jazeera English

    From article:

"It is a slap in the face of all Americans," said Senator John McCain (R - AZ), referring to Russia's decision to grant asylum to Edward Snowden. He demanded that the Russians face " serious repercussions " for their decision.

Well, turn the other cheek, I say. McCain ran for president in 2008 promising to be more belligerent towards the Russians, so this is normal for Dr.Strangelove and his crusty Cold War foaming at the mouth.

Not to be outdone, Democratic Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) said that Russia had "stabbed us in the back," and that "each day that Mr. Snowden is allowed to roam free is another twist of the knife".

Twist and shout! The Russians did a big favour for the freedom-loving peoples of the world, including those in the US who can still think with our own brains. The self-righteous pundits who complain about Russia's own human rights record, as if this were even remotely relevant, might try to recall how Snowden ended up there in the first place. He was passing through Moscow on his way to South America, and it was only by virtue of Washington's "gross violations of his human rights," as Amnesty International called it, that he got stuck there.

Indeed, the whole chase scene is symbolic of the difficulties in which Washington finds itself immersed. Unable to win their case in the court of public opinion, the self-styled leaders of the free world resort to threats and bullying to get their way - which kind of sums up American foreign policy in the second decade of the 21st century. And the spectacle of US attorney general Eric Holder trying to offer Russia assurances that his government would not torture or execute Snowden speaks volumes about how far the US government's reputation on human rights - even within the United States - has plummeted over the past decade.

Meanwhile, Snowden and Glenn Greenwald and Wikileaks are winning. At the outset Snowden said his biggest fear was that people would see "the lengths that the government is going to grant themselves powers unilaterally to create greater control over American society and global society and that 'nothing will change'". But his disclosures have already created a new debate, and political change will follow.

Two weeks ago there was a surprisingly close call in the US House of Representatives, with the majority of House Democrats and 94 of 234 Republicans defying their House (and Senate) leadership, the White House, and the national security establishment in a vote to end the NSA's mass collection of phone records. The amendment was narrowly defeated by a vote of 205 to 217, but it was clear that "this is only the beginning," as John Conyers (D-MI), ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee announced.

A week later Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Democratic Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, called a hearing where he challenged the Obama administration's claims that the NSA dragnet had been effective in disrupting terrorist plots. According to Leahy, the classified list that he had been shown of "terrorist events" did not show that "dozens or even several terrorist plots" had been thwarted by the NSA's surveillance of domestic phone calls.

It is beginning to sink in that the main target of the NSA's massive spying programmes is not terrorism but the American people themselves (as well as other non-terrorist populations throughout the world). Pew Research finds for the first time since 2004 that there are more Americans concerned that government "anti-terror" programmes have "gone too far in restricting civil liberties" than those who think not enough has been done to protect people from terrorism.

Then Glenn Greenwald broke the story of the NSA's XKeyscore programme, the "widest reaching" of its secret surveillance systems, based on Snowden's revelations. Greenwald has become a one-man army, swatting down attackers from the national security/journalistic establishment like a hero from a video game. Here you can see him wipe the floor with CNN's Jeffrey Toobin, or David Gregory of Meet the Press; or the most devastating takedown ever of a Washington Post journalist, Walter Pincus, who had to run a massive correction after promoting a false, far-fetched conspiracy theory about Greenwald and Wikileaks.

Greenwald was joined on CNN by James Risen, a 15-year veteran of the New York Times , who is himself being threatened with jail for refusing to testify in a criminal trial of former CIA employee Jeffrey Sterling. Sterling, like Snowden, has been charged under the infamous Espionage Act for leaking classified information to Risen. It is another case with ominous implications for civil liberties and investigative journalism.

"I can tell you, I've been an investigative reporter for a long time," said Risen. "And almost always, the government says that when you write a story, it's going to cause damage. And then they can never back it up. They say that about everything….It's getting old."

Indeed it is. And as Washington threatens to worsen relations with Russia - which together with the United States has most of the nuclear weapons in the world - over Snowden's asylum there, it's hard not to wonder about this fanatical pursuit of someone Obama dismissed as a "29-year-old hacker". Is it because he out-smarted a multi-billion dollar "intelligence community" of people who think they are really very smart but are now looking rather incompetent?

If Snowden really leaked information that harmed US national security, why haven't any of these "really very smart" people been fired? Are we to believe that punishing this whistleblower is important enough to damage relations with other countries and put at risk all kinds of foreign policy goals, but the breach of security isn't enough for anyone important to be fired? Or is this another indication, like the generals telling Obama what his options were in Afghanistan, of the increasing power of the military/national security apparatus over our elected officials?

Apparently Obama is cancelling his meeting with Putin over this, and going to....... Sweden.......... instead, during the same period.

Sweden is of course absolutely starstruck at this... You might believe it was Jesus Christ returning as you read how supposedly "significant" this meeting is, and how interested Obama is in Sweden (yeah RIGHT!!!! Hopefully he knows roughly where on the map to find it, and realises it's not the same country as Switzerland.) This Nobel peace price winner who is fighting multiple wars at any time and sends drones to kill citizens in allied countries.

I'd much rather he was barred from entry. Or why not arrest him for war crimes against humanity?
The Africans who booed him in South Africa had the right idea.
But no doubt the King will wine, dine and attempt to dazzle him.

This culminates Swedens transformation from radical, idealistic left wingers under Palme (who got shot under mysterious circumstances) and 22 years of washing its hands of socialism, arse-licking a certain large country to the West, and attempting to provoke a certain other neighbour to the East.... (Carl Bildt who has been in various government posts since then, is behind that policy ) I can't believe what the country's come to. The FRA law, about spying on Russia's internet traffic which passes through Sweden.... The parody of the Julian Assange trial..... replacing struggle for social justice with politically correct fascism..... Allowing America's torture flights and capturing people's fingerprints when they get a passport and allowing the USA access to the fingerprint database.

I don't recognise the country I was born in anymore. There is essentially nothing left of what used to be good. Social safety and equality is dismantled and sold out. The holy neutrality is a parady. as Swedish troops fights with NATO in Afghanistan.

So Sweden's been licking the arse for +20 years, and sold out all the values that people were brought up to believe in. And is finally "rewarded" with this visit. Grabbing it from Russia which did the RIGHT thing in allowing Snowden asylum.

This Obama visit is a culmination about everything I dislike.
I hope there are enough rotten eggs around, and that someone can aim well.

Sorry Rockzmon and Deborski, you know it's not personal.

Hanna, could you describe in detail (probably, in another thread) the changes in Sweden for last decades and what it was like in Palme era.
Especially I am interested in "Social safety and equality", education, amount of garbage in the streets, how much Swedes had/has to work etc.

Yeah sure, but I am conscious of not talking to much about things not related to Russia in this forum... But I'll do it later...

Interesting that Ed's dad is now going to Russia with a solicitor. Very naive to imagine that it is safe for Edward under any circumstances to return to the USA.

The other issue with him going to Russia, is that no doubt he'll have the CIA hot on his heals, who may be interested in knowing precisely where in Russia Edward is.

The best thing the father could do for his son is probably to let things settle and keep a low profile.

I'd love to see Ed become a host on RT though! Imagine how the US ratings would SKY-ROCKET if that happened. he could be a technology reporter or something. Wouldn't that be cool!

But seriously, he'd better get on with learning Russian because he'd be a fool to leave the relative safety Russia can offer him right now.

I'm curious as to where he actually is, but I think it's best that it's kept a secret.

Yeah I read about Snowden's dad and the attorney. He thinks he can win the case for Snowden but I don't believe it. Here's what I see happening:

    1. The government promises that Snowden can have a fair trial in a civilian court.
    2. He comes back here.
    3. They decide that the case needs to be tried in a military court. Big surprise!
    4. Snowden gets hit worse than Manning did.
    5. Bye bye Snowden.

I think Snowden's dad just doesn't want people to call his son a Russian. So he wants to clean up his family's rep.
As for me, if I was Snowden, I would never leave Russia, period.
But I hate politics so I could never be like Manning or Snowden. Politics just makes life tons more complicated and it's already too complicated now.
But yeah, it will be interesting to see what happens with Snowden. If he's really that intelligent then he won't believe the lawyer or his dad.

Oh wait! If he really was that intelligent, he would have been a chef instead of a spy. Awesome food trumps politics!
