I think, it's got to be so. I gather, it might be dangerous. Soon, for the sake of security, they may say "let's abolish the president elections, for they always destabilize the political situation in the country. What if they vote for a terrorost, huh?" It wouldn't be far off for them to say they are 'temporarily' dismantling elections because switching presidents would harm the "war effort." It's been done in the past, its just as likely of happening again.

I think you need to keep this in perspective. It's an op-ed piece. All this guy is talking about is how he is worried that because he was a soldier in Iraq, people will start to act differently around him because their paranoid that he's some insiduous government agent.
To label this a "soviet-style" approach to government I think is pretty far fetched. If the author said he was given orders upon returning to report suspicious activity by potential threats, or something like that, then maybe I could start to agree with the aforementioned statement. But as it stands, the article is just some guy saying he hopes people don't treat him differently because he was a soldier.
