On page 12 of the July/August 2006 Russian Life magazine is a piece titled "Russians who" and one section is

Russians who have a positive opinion of:

Vladimir Putin 76%
Vladimir Lenin 47%
Yuri Andropov 47%
Leonid Brezhnev 39%
Tsar Nicholai II 39%
Josef Stalin 36%
Nikita Khrushchev 28%
Mikhail Gorbachev 20%
Boris Yeltsin 12%

Is that for real that Stalin is looked upon better than Gorbachev and Yeltsin?

Yeah, i guess it`s right. Older people seems to like this guy... Why it is so strange?

I'm really surprised that Lenin are Stalin are still so popular. And I hardly can believe anybody voted for that moron, Brezhnev. Gosh, there are so many jokes about him, that he became almost a folk character.

What's about G. and Y., I think G. was a push-over, and Y. is reincarnation of Brezhnev. Besides, their presidency concured with very hard times for our country and many people blame them for economical and political hardship.

It's well known that Stalin is popular among older people in Russia. And Gorbachev is blamed with causing the end of the Soviet Union which was a very traumatic and humiliating time for Russia. And Yeltsin was president during Russia's economic crisis of the mid-90s.

Yeltsin was also a drunk and a public embarrsement to Russia...

well, Brezhnev mostly known by he`s last days in Politbureau, when he was a realy sick oldman with alzheimer syndrome. But when he was younger, he was much more good politican as i know.

Anyway, it`s hard to judge them now, from our point of view... Who is better, this one, who has lost many lives, but has buid strong empire, or this one, who has given a "freedom" for people but made a country a "third-world"?

People could vote for Brezhnev for seeming stability in that period of time. Drunkarts were not punished at work and people could go to work and do nothing there. What I remember was this: a cheapest taperecorder, that cost $25 abroad, turned here into a $500 device, a coloured TV set cost 700 rubles while people earned from 80 to 200 rubles and those broke very often.

Not on this planet, i think.
