Thread: цепочка?

Does this refer to an outdoor chain for a bike or a boat, just a jewellery chain, or both?

I thought it meant proper sturdy chain, but running it in Yandex Image, I only get pictures of jewellery.

цепочка is a dimunitive of цепь, so цепочка is really just a small chain

Anything that looks like a small chain can be called цепочка.

In your case it's jewellery, but it can be anything looking like a small chain

У меня цепочка протеста не вызывает. Мне кажется, цепочку позднее услышала. Я из Киева.

I've heard both variants in Vologda region
With цепочка considered grammatically correct in that region.

I can guess that Western part of ex-USSR, including Western part of Russia uses both variants.

No, it is not the question of East and West at all. I think цепочка is used by less educated people, it's one of the reason. Second, it's like saying "красенькие" instead of "красненькие", some special style of language, but not a dialect. It's like "if it's just an uninteresting chain, it's a цепочка, but if it's a oh-so-lovely chain I'm dreaming of / I see on you, then it's a цепочка".

I agree with that but that only be true for "official" Russian.
I have an example for you.
Long time it was considered grammatically correct to say that word "кофе" has a masculine gender. But many people were using neutral gender. Finally linguists "approved" both genders to be grammatically correct, so it's a matter of perspective.
The word "цепочка" comes from Old Slavonic "чепочка" which comes from a word "чеп". This is a very old word and the stress of the word also comes from that time, those times people didn't have official linguists and spoken in different "dialects", so I don't see why it couldn't be a "dialect", theoretically.

Кофе is masculine. If you use the neutral gender, it'll indicate your low education, even if you can find this form in some(!) dictionaries.

С 1 сентября(2009) согласно приказу Министерства образования можно будет употреблять слова совсем не так, как мы привыкли. К примеру, слово “кофе” теперь имеет не только мужской, но и средний род.

Грамотность не имеет никакого отношения к тому, к какому роду относится слово кофе. Кроме плоской буквы орфографических правил, существует еще живой дух.
Кофе мужского рода - это нонсенс для русского языка. Живая речь совершенно правильно выправляет его на средний.

Осталось дождаться, когда уже в словари занесут человеческие жури, брошуру и парашут вместо анекдотических жюри, брошюра и парашют и уберут слова-исключения на цы-.

Я бы сказал проблема в самом ЕГЭ, а не в бедных учених, которым приходится его сдавать

I'm from Omsk. I've never heard anyone here saying цепочка, although I've heard цепочка somewhere before. Most likely I've heard that on TV

when we use this word to refer to electric circuits, stress is naturally always цепОчка (basically, it's slang for a simple electric circuit or part of circuit). I am not sure this technical meaning could be of any use to laymen though.

but if you refer to bikes, boats it's supposed to be a цепь (as a mechanism it is supposed to be hard and reliable), while цепочка is perceived as something fragile (so usually it's something of jewelry type).

additionally, if a causal relationship is meant, both words цепочка or цепь are used (цепь событий, etc.)

Как ювелир могу подтвердить, что все мои русские клиенты когда хотят купить один chain изпользуют слово: цепочка

Кажется, официально ювелирные изделия должны называться цепи:
Тяжелые серебряные цепи - Каталог | Массивные, байкерские, готические, рокерские

Похоже на ситуацию, когда везде продают сорочки, а покупают рубашки.
В какой момент сорочка становится рубашкой -- вот загадка!

Цепочка слышал, но от деревенских жителей.
