Thread: Также тоже и ну.

I have been using these to say "also" but i'm not sure at what times one should be used over the other.I have been told that "Также" should be used to begin a sentence and "Тоже" is more common in the middle of a sentence.If anyone could highlight any other meanings or uses i would appreciate it.

I have also noticed "Ну" popping up from time to time.Is this just an embelishment?

Также и тоже are used differently. It has nothing to do with their position in a sentence. It is rather a matter of logic.
You use также when you supply some additional information about the same subject.
E.g.:
Максим хорошо играет на гитаре. Он также неплохо поёт. - Maxim plays guitar well. He also sings well.
Here we talk about the same subject (Maxim). First, we inform about his guitar skills, and then we add some more information about him using также.

Тоже is used when you apply the same information to another subject.
E.g.:
Максим хорошо играет на гитаре. Я тоже играю на гитаре. - Maxim plays guitar well. I also play guitar.
Here we talk about different subject (first one is Maxim, next is I). But we apply the same information to both.

in general i agree with Боб Уайтман, however one can also say

Максим хорошо играет на гитаре. Я также играю на гитаре. (stressing the word также in the sentence)

it is true that также can be placed at the head of the sentence if it's used to add new information on the subject

Максим хорошо играет на гитаре. Также он неплохо поёт.

while

Максим хорошо играет на гитаре. Он неплохо поёт тоже.

however in this respect the difference is that также sounds more formal and bureaucratic so to speak
также in many cases sounds awkward if used instead of тоже in colloquial speech and in fact almost never used in it


there're lots of minute tints of difference in meaning and usage between these two and the meaning you wish to convey defines their placement within the sentence.


"ну" isn't embellishment by far and is usually considered a so called "parasite word" which people resort to, not having anything to say, being reluctant to say something or having hard time to formulate their thoughts, a pause filler, if a person uses "ну" a lot, that may mean being tongue tied
it's also used in sentences expressing some sort of reservation or objection in response to someone's statement

Eg.

- Ох и жара стоит сегодня!
- Ну я бы не сказал, что так уж жарко.


it's English "well"


being linked with "а" and "же" it transmits a sense of urgency and impatience to a sentence (this word is used to spur a horse, there's also a same root verb "понукать")

Саша любить пить водку.Тоже я люблю пить водку.

У меня очень широкий круг общения, и я с трудом могу припомнить, что кто-то из этого круга любит водку.

When learning the cases i was taught to always keep an example sentence in my mind that i could call upon to help me remember the rules.

That sentence liking vodka was one of them as i always used to write : Я люблю пюь водка

Other examples were "Банк - Здесь нет банка" etc.

Anyway,i love vodka - Мне нравется Русский стандарт.
