    Does anyone know what the origin/root of спасибо is, like what part of speach is it formed from and stuff.

    Like благодарить is obviously a verb and formed from благо and дар / дарить.

    Does спасибо have anything to do with спасти?

    As far as I know it's from the phrase "Спаси (тебя) Бог".
    I'll try to find proof in the Web later.

    Этимология
    Происходит от праслав. *съпаси богъ; ср.: укр. спаси́бi «спасибо». Староверы избегают этого выражения, поскольку видят в нем «спаси бай» и усматривают в слове «бай» название языческого бога.

    Очень может быть. В книге "Тихий Дон" казаки постоянно вместо нашего спасибо! говорят спаси Христос!
