Thread: они сделают... confusion...

I wanted to find some examples of how "сделают" is used...

The reason is that I got confused when I was translating a sentence containing "they are going to" which was suppose to be "они сделают". At firstI had thought that some version of "cобираемся" or "быть" should be used. But instead "сделают" was used.

So I looked online for some sentences containing "они сделают... "

Here are some sentences that I found and could understand, apart from how "сделают" is used.
I only got more confused after seeing the examples.

The grammar book says that this is present tense, but it seems to be used in reference to future and past too! Assuming I understood it correctly (but I checked in Google Translator to be certain).

I hope my question makes some degree of sense..

Что они сделают?
What are they going to do? (future)

Они сделают город лучше.
They are making the city better (present)

Что они сделают с нашми деньгами?
What have they done with our money? (past)

Что они сделают следующим летом?(future)
What are they going to do next summer?

If anybody could help me to shed some light on this I'd be very grateful!

It can't be present. "Сделать" is a perfective verb and perfective verbs have no present forms in Russian. "Делают" is present, but not "сделают."

Что они сделают с нашими деньгами?

And it's future here, not past.

Что они сделают?
What are they going to do? (future)

Они сделают город лучше.
They are making the city better (present)

Что они сделают с нашми деньгами?
What have they done with our money? (past)

Что они сделают следующим летом?(future)
What are they going to do next summer?

Are these examples from your grammar book? Throw it out.

Oh... Then:

Что они сделают?
I'd translate this one as "What will they do?"

Они сделают город лучше.
They'll make the city better.

Что они сделают с нашими деньгами?
What will they do with our money?

Что они сделают следующим летом?
The sentence sounds unnatural. Anyway, the translation would be "What will they do next summer?"

Actually, this post by me was not very clear. And I might have got myself even more confused when I tried to "research" it.

Thanks for giving the correct translation.

I haven't quite started the serious grammar cramming yet, so I haven't got into the routine of checking these kinds of things.

But basically what you are saying is that "сделают" is future.
... and anything else is confusion or a mistake...

PS - Zaya I have settled for Юханна!
Thanks for the advice with that earlier! The nicknames for my name is normally Hanna, Hanni or Jojo - but I think Hanna is the only one that sounds "normal" in Russian.

Using grammar books is not the only way to identify the tense / the form. There are online dictionaries where you can find word forms. I know only Multitran, but there might be others.
Type in / paste the word, then click on the word before "гл." / "сущ." etc. You'll see the table with its forms:

Johanna, the perfective verbs are conjugated like present tense verbs but refer to the future when they are. Only imperfective verbs form their future with быть. Past tense is the same for both.

Perfective verbs can only apply to past or future because the present always is just an instant. Perfective verbs refer to actions which were completed at some point in the past or will be completed at some point in the future, but action plus completion can never fully take place in the present.

Ok, now I get thatt the verbs with the extra bit on them, like сделать are the perfective while the basic form делать is the imperfektive. I didn't quite understand what people were talking about earlier because I just assumed that all verbs were the same. German doesn't have anything like that, does it?

None of the Germanic languages have, as far as I know. But the "extra bit" doesn't automatically mean a verb is perfective. That would be far too easy. You get perfective verbs which get another extra bit which makes them imperfective. Essentially you have to learn with each verb whether it is perfective or imperfective. Dictionaries will usually give you the other aspect partner when you look up a verb, too. A handful of verbs can be both perfective and imperfective.
