Thread: "Он представляет собой..."

In what way is the above phrase (and its variations - она, эти, и т.д.) used? And, what is the implication, sense-wise (formal, archaic...)?

Online, I see quite a few different contexts, w/ different cases - nominative, accusative, and instrumental. Maybe others, too. Grammatically, then, what is correct?

«он представляет собой» — это обычная русская фраза. Используется и в разговоре, но чаще на письме.
Примерно можно перевести словом «correspond»

Это просто синоним слова «это», но звучащий более научно, более умно.

Матрица представляет собой двумерную таблицу чисел
[Matrix corresponds to a two dimentional table of numbers]
Матрица — это двумерная таблица чисел
[Matrix is a two dimentional table of numbers]

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I can see that this phrase is always followed by accusative case, and this is right.

For the most part it is better to translate «представляет собой» with “is/are,” not with “corresponds to.”

"представляет собой"="представляет из себя". It means "is/are" and implies an explanative description or decomposition of the subject.

А мне так не нравятся эти «представляет из себя»...

Сразу ассоциации с фразами «выходит из себя», «весь из себя», «из кожи вон лезет» и т.п.

this is just another way of saying "it is", in the sense that one thing "is" another thing when they are both the same thing
