Can someone please help me to detect their difference, through examples.
Based on my general understanding they both mean: connect and unite.
There is also is the verb сочетать which means combine. Google translate also says that объединять means combine.

Объединять usually means "to unite", when we mix/share something or unite objects into a group.
Соединять implies a connection, communication or (physical) contact/touch between objects.
Сочетать means that you combine something comparing the parts and select the necessary combination (usually the best combination). You can often hear the reflexive form of the verb, it's "сочетаться". Also there is the verb "комбинировать".

Объединять and соединять are interchangeable sometimes (with slight nuances).

Мы объединили усилия.
Тренер объединил нас в команду. (united us into the team)
Общая религия объединяет Россию с Кипром.
Антонио объединил два торговых зала. (so now Antonio has one big selling space)
Эти часы объединяет только одно - они золотые. (There's only one thing that unites these watches, that's gold)
Компании объединили свои активы. (= assets)
Мы должны объединиться! (We have to unite!)

Электрик соединяет провода. (implies electrical contact)

Also "Соединенные Штаты Америки" (США = USA), not "Объединенные Штаты Америки" (although literally it's "united" as you know). The same with The United Kingdom = Соединенное Королевство.

Сочетать полезное с приятным. (a common proverb, means "to do something useful and pleasant at the same time")

соединять = connect (two pieces of one wire so that the current can pass through the connection from one wire to the other)

объединять = join, unite (several wires into one bunch or harness so that they can be easily located or positioned within a device or a compartment, probably covered with tape or put into cable channel)

А штаты Америки - соединенные.

Может быть потому, что их соединили из двух кусков при помощи гражданской войны.

А серьезно - получается, что облака значений сильно перекрываются и можно говорить только о современных тенденциях их дрейфа.

- If I am correct here also means connect.
2. How I will say: We shouldn't connect/associate this murder with previous murders.

1. For e-mails however the correct word is: прикреплять = attach
2. I should conclude that you Russians avoid the use of the word: ассоциировать
3. Also something no related with the general question. Consider the following example: "If Ukraine wants to enter the European Union it should satisfy specific requirements". How is translated?

1. In Russian there is a set term 'Вложить' (include). Я вложил файл с отчётом в письмо. Смотри вложение / вложенный файл. Иногда говорят "прикреплённый файл"
2. Ассоциировать as a verb is too long and too 'foreign', too cumbersome to pronounce. You can use it, I suppose, but in common speech you will hear it very seldom.
3. Если Украина хочет вступить (войти is ok too) в Евросоюз, она должна удовлетворять определённым требованиям.
