    за+verb

What exactly does the prefix "за-" do to a verb? There are probably hundreds of verbs that can take that prefix. Do they have anything in common? Please give a few examples. Also, please specify if there is any difference in this respect between verbs of motion (ходить-->заходить) and other verbs (хотеть-->захотеть).

I read somewhere that in some cases, "за-" gives the verb an air of informality. How accurate is this?

    Thanks in advance.

    Let's see.
1.1. за+imperfective (iterative) = perfective has a meaning of "to start to ..."
    забЕгать, запрыгать, закричать, заскучать
1.2. за+imperfective progressive (verbs of motion only) = perfective has a meaning of
    a) "to move into behind of something" or "to move too far"
Он зашел за угол дома. Не заплывайте за буйки! Куда мы зашли?
    b) "to come one time", "to move into something"
зайди ко мне. Он зашел в квартиру.
1.3 perfective with "за- + object in accusative has a meaning of "to obtain some result by doing something with the object"
    задуть свечу, закрыть дверь

2.1 imperfective with "за-" (verbs of motion only) - derivative from 1.2 (can have both iterative and progressive meaning)
    забегАть, заходить, заплывать
2.2 imperfective with "за-" - derivative from 1.3
    задувать свечу, закрывать дверь

    non-categorized: запрыгивать/запрыгнуть
"Россия для русских" - это неправильно. Остальные-то чем лучше?

Also: запить лекарство водой, заесть таблетку хлебом...

    3. Очень много, слишком
Завешать все стены картинамы (note: что чем)

    4. Ingressive meaning. Начать делать что-нибудь
