    ли?

    ли
I have a good idea of how it is used in writing, but how common is it really in speach? I have several movies in Russian, and I've yet to actually notice it used in conversation. Is it often used and what would be some examples? Thanks.

Yeah it is probably more used in writing, but I have heard in speech.

Particulary in phrases like "не так ли?"

I don't think it is used seldom in speech.

    Study these examples.

Do you know if/whether anybody saw you? - Ты не знаешь, видел ли тебя кто-нибудь?
I don't know if/whether Sue is going out tonight. - Я не знаю, собирается ли Сью куда-нибудь (идти) сегодня вечером.
Can you tell me if/whether there is a bank near here? - Не могли бы Вы мне сказать, есть ли поблизости банк?
He asked me if/whether I was glad to be back. - Он спросил меня, был ли я рад вернуться/возвращению.

So in Russian "ли" is often used in the situations where English-speaking people use "if/whether".
Please correct my mistakes if you can, especially article usage.

Is it even possible to phrase "whether" questions n Russian without using ли?

Well, I thought about it a little and here is what I can say. Let's use the example sentences I gave above.

Ты не знаешь, видел ли тебя кто-нибудь?
You can also leave out "ли" - Ты не знаешь, видел тебя кто-нибудь?
But if we leave out "ли", we should reconsider word order. It would sound a bit better like this - Ты не знаешь, тебя кто-нибудь видел?

Не могли бы Вы мне сказать, есть ли поблизости банк?
You can also say it without "ли" - Не могли бы Вы мне сказать, поблизости есть банк?
But it sounds better with "ли".

Я не знаю, собирается ли Сью куда-нибудь (идти) сегодня вечером.
Он спросил меня, был ли я рад вернуться/возвращению.
I think you can't leave out "ли" in these two sentences.

So, considering all this, I would say:

You can leave out "ли" in interrogative clauses
(Do you know if/whether anybody saw you? - Ты не знаешь, тебя кто-нибудь видел?
Can you tell me if/whether there is a bank near here? - Не могли бы Вы мне сказать, поблизости есть банк?)

But you can't leave out "ли" in affirmative clauses
(I don't know if/whether Sue is going out tonight. - Я не знаю, собирается ли Сью куда-нибудь (идти) сегодня вечером.
He asked me if/whether I was glad to be back. - Он спросил меня, был ли я рад вернуться/возвращению.)

Whew, hope that was correct and helpful

Очень хороший ответ, Вадим, на 5 с плюсом.
Только вместо "Ты не знаешь, видел тебя кто-нибудь?" я бы сказала "Как ты думаешь, видел тебя кто-нибудь?"

Of course, I am surprised why no one has mentioned the word: ЕСЛИ

Here are Vadim's examples еслиlized (I am not 100% on word order)

What was that? These "еслиlized" phrases have no sense.

Все твои "если" мне не нравятся в этих предложениях. Но Вадим, я думаю, лучше меня это обоснует.

As we all know, I am no expert....... but it seems to me that I distinctly remember in New Penguin Chapter 13 something about ....whenever "if" can be replaced by "whether" in English, the word "ли" must be used in Russian. Never если.
    Is that right?

    Re: ли?

Do you know, if anybody saw you ?

If cannot be just replaced by "если" here...and in the other phrases as well.

Yep, good remark, DDT. That is exactly the case here. When "if" means the same as "whether" you cannot translate it into Russian as "если".

Хех, спасибо на добром слове, но, если у меня получилось один раз что-то хорошо объяснить, это еще не означает, что я преподаватель русского языка (тем более для иностранцев), полностью разбираюсь в этом деле и могу доходчиво это излагать
