    "а" means an opposition.
"а" is not like "и", you can't mix them up.
    "и" is "and".
    "а" is closer to "but".

I am not in Stockholm but in Malmo.
    "а" usually expresses opposition, e.g.
Ты купил водку, а я просил коньяк.
You have bought vodka but I asked for cognac.
Нужно сначала думать, потом делать, а не наоборот.
You have to think before you do, not the other way round.
Сначала мы поедем в Москву, а потом в Волгоград.
First we go to Moscow and then to Volgograd. (here is the "opposition" in time, not in meaning)
    Ты сядешь у прохода, а я у иллюминатора.
You will take the aisle seat and I will take the window seat. ("opposition" in space)
"и" expresses just conjunction without any opposition.

SO perhaps if we tranlaste this.

You get the the firewood while i getting the water.

"While" perhaps should be a "a" to?

Iv'e heard many times people saying "А ты?" =While you/And you?

Hm, but in this case "and" is not a conjunction, I think...
"А ты?" means ~"How about you?". If there is some opposition: "Я иду в кино. А ты?". (I go - do you go?).

Ты за дровами а я за вод(к)у. Can't argue with results!
Вот это да, я так люблю себя. И сегодня я люблю себя, ещё больше чем вчера, а завтра я буду любить себя to ещё больше чем сегодня. Тем что происходит,я вполне доволен!

"While" is more like "в то время как..." than "a"
Well, I don't know what to say. I want to say thanks to the Academy, to Mama, to Papa and to my dog. I love you all.

Think of a as meaning but/whereas. In both you have an opposition of things or actions, whereas in и you do not.

Secondly, very often Russians begin a question with A, which you do not translate as anything.
    У меня в кармане гвоздь.
    А что у вас?

Since I don't know Russian grammar as well as you, I'd really like to learn how textbooks on Russian grammar explain the use of "а". Are there any particular situations in which the use of "а" makes the sentence sound much better or more natural if you like? To me it just sounds so natural to use "а" in some questions. I've never thought about this word. Maybe, it's like ну?

Не могу достаточно подчеркивать свое уважение к грамматике Terrence Wade, A Comprehensive Russian Grammar. Внизу выдержка из этой книги.

    Adversative conjunctions

    1) A 'and, but, whereas'

    i. links ideas that contrast without conflicting. Same parts of spееch on either side.
    Он сидит, а я стою.

ii. introduces a positive statement via a preceding negative:
    Книга не белая, а красная.
    Она не пишет, а читает.
You can put the negative second:
    Книга красная, а не белая.

iii. introduces a supplementary statement or question:
    А где другие гости?
Note the phrase а вдруг. А вдруг он не вовремя придет? What if he doesn't get here in time?

    iv. introduces parentheticals
Появление зрителей, а их было человек 80, снова мобилизовало актёров.

    2. НО

    i. links clauses that express incompatible ideas:
    Машина старая, но хорошая.

ii. Often close in meaning to однако or несмотря на это.
Ему захотелось позвонить в больницу, но (=однако/но несмотря на это) он сдержал себя и позвонил только утром.

    3. И, А, НО
Learners sometimes experience difficulty in selecting the appropriate conjunction, especially where A and НО are concerned. The following examples, each of which begins in the same way, illustrate:

    И introduces additional info:
    Он молодой и энергичный.
А introduces contrasting but not conflicting info:
    Он молодой, а она старая.
НО introduces info that is in antithesis to the first statement:
Он молодой, но опытный. Она любит кошек, но не любит собак.

Note: А and НО sometimes appear in the same context, where НО expresses stronger antithesis that A:
Он хочет, а я не хочу. He wants to, and I don't.
Он хочет, но я не хочу. He wants to, but I don't.

Whew, enough typing. Надеюсь что довёз до форума полезную информацию (вначале писал «инфу» но видя на экране аватар Оли, передумал!).

Спасибо за разъяснение мне, русскому На самом деле, мне было очень интересно почитать правила/варианты использования "а". А что касается изучающих русских, то я думаю, им будет не только интересно почитать выдержку из Terrence Wade, A Comprehensive Russian Grammar, но и полезно.

    It's like "ну а"
    Ага

Вот, уже второй человек замечает волевые черты лица на аватаре, которое стоит на страже чистоты русского языка.
