    In this sentence:

    what case is счастливым in?

what is the direct translation and what is actual meaning?

I think it is saying " my friends make me happy" but why would happy be in the dative case?

    Счастливым is in Instrumental Case.

Instrumental Case has many various meanings in Russian. In particular, it is used:

    1. For denoting state, appearance, manner etc with verbs such as: являться («быть»), бывать, стать («превратиться»), делать, делаться, казаться, оказываться, показаться, получиться, остаться, пребывать, представляться, обратиться, притвориться, прикинуться, выглядеть and so on.

-- "My friends make me happy"
-- "He looks pleased."
-- "The city seemed deserted."
-- "It seems strange to me."
-- "The prince turned into a bumblebee", from a poem by Alexander Pushkin.

    2. For denoting similarity:
выть волком -- to howl like a wolf
умереть героем -- to die like a hero
лететь стрелой -- to fly like an arrow
