in my quest of verbs of motion

    i come accross this issue

use of perfective when they came and stayed

Когда пришли мои товариши, мы сделали что-то
When my comrades arrived, we did something

then use of imperfective when we want to mean that they came and went back.

Они приходили но никого не было дома
They arrived but nobody was at home

Which tense to use when you want to express continuous past like

While they were arriving, they got shot by a crook.
    Когда они приходили, .... ???
    Alors qu'ils arrivaient

    thx

    You could use a gerund:

    Приходя..... = While arriving
    Придя

    I'm not sure which one.

But I think Когда они приходили works.
Since the imperfective expresses a continuous action.

It gets a little tricky here. Приходить doesnt seem to work well in a continuous action. Они приходили, но никого не было дома implies a repetitive action rather than a continuous action (they left but are supposed to come back, to come back again one has to leave first)

You cannot use the gerund with passive voice (Not in the case of While they were arriving, they got shot by a crook, TATY):
Придя домой, он переоделся works but
    Придя домой, его переодели doesn't.

A simple Когда они пришли, их застрелили looks like the best way to say it.
If you'd like to emphasize "l'imparfait" you are better off with a different verb and be more specific:

Когда они заходили в дверь, их застрелили
Когда они входили в дом, из застрелили
    or even
В тот момент, когда они пришли...

I know since with a gerund, the subject of a gerund must be the same as the subject of the verb.

Yes, and since the subject often changes (disappears?) when a sentence in passive voice is tranlated into Russian, you dont have much of a choice.

Even if you managed to keep the subject
Проснувшись, он был покормлен. sounds wacky
Когда он проснулся, он был покормлен. OK

In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

so there is not difference between 1 and 2 ?

    it is like

Вчера вечером мы ходили в театр
Вчера вечером мы пошли в театр

    what's the difference?

Re: in my quest of verbs of motion

Вчера вечером мы ходили в театр - you indicate the fact that you were at the theater yesterday evening.
Вчера вечером мы пошли в театр - you say that you went to the theater and ... (you're going to tell more).

пошёл can also mean "set off".

As in they commenced the first part of the journey, what came next is unknown or irrelevent.
