    Couple of things

How do you say "soda" (or "pop" if you are from the south) in Russian?
I looked up "soda" in my dictionary and it said "сода" but somehow, I do not think this is correct.

Is the following a "контейнер" or a "коробка"?
Or is there a better term?

    soda=газированная вода, simply газировка

контейнер или коробка или даже лоток = all are okay

    Thanks
Is "газировка" a common word? I can't seem to find it in my dictionary.
Will people give me funny looks if I say "Дайте мне газировку пожалуйста."

er... maybe I haven't been home for too long, but for me, "gazirovka" means one and only one thing -- that is, carbonated water.
    Definitely not pepsi or coke.
I am not actually sure if there is a common Russian name for the soda pop Thinking about it, I don't use the English word "soda" much either, I usually just name the drink or even use "coke" for everything.
oh, and as for the dictionary entry, "soda" means "baking soda" in Russian.

But pepsi and coke are carbonated water too, or aren't they? Of course it's more common to call them "пепси" and "кола" but that doesn't change their substance.

    — Что будешь пить?
    — Есть какая-нибудь газировка?
    — Пепси пойдёт?
    — Угу.

В определённых контекстах и "Пепси", и "Кока-кола" вполне можно назвать "газировкой" (или "лимонадом"). А уж "Фанту" — сам бог велел.

Если выражаться немного более формально, то всё это — газированые напитки.

Yep, it's carbonated water but with lots of sugar, coloring, caffine, and preservatives. Yummy!

Type in "газировка" in Yandex and see how many quality quotes will pop up where this word means sweet soda.

By quality results I mean quotes from books/reputable media as opposed to posts in web forums etc, where people often use words incorrectly. And mineral water is one thing that "газировка" just can't mean, imho

On the second thought, I wouldn't say "коробка" meaning that one in the pic. Контейнер is better. Other suggestions?

I am originally from New York and I always referred to Coke, Pepsi, Seven Up etc. as soda.

Газировка, контейнер are pretty normal. However I've never thought how to call thease things.
