How do you translate this sentence? Is [Everyone was afraid that the children could lose their way in the forest.] a correct translation?

Nahh. That sounds weird. It sounds as if A. they're already lost, but you're not sure where, maybe in the forest, or B. someone else loses them in the forest (oh whoops - honey, I dropped the kids somewhere....Or: ...could be lost in the forest)
Better:
".... could get lost in the forest" (=possibility, they might just get lost) or ".... would get lost in the forest" (=they're almost sure to get lost)
