    I agree with those posters who said that "заранее спасибо" has a more pleasant ring to it. But the difference isn't crucial.

    True. Not sure if it was this forum - but on a language forum, minor details could be important.

    I have actually heard "thanks/thank you in advance" many times. I think it can be rude, as you said, if said sarcastically - which is always difficult in written language. But I sometimes think of that phrase as "in case I am unable to respond to your help, thank you in advance." Especially on a web forum where someone may ask a question, someone else may answer it, and the former does not see the answer for a few weeks.
