    блына

Is this a derogatory word? I couldn't find much information other than its association with "pancake."

EDIT: Oh, and I think it's spelled блина.

I believe that блин is a euphemism that means something like "darn!"

I would second that -- it's like "darn," "shoot," "crap," or any number of other such words that express suprise or frustration -- and it's not really vulgar -- it's the kind of thing you'd say in front of mom.

Edit: Arggh. Foiled by the filter again -- Mods, may I respectfully request that you get rid of the filter on "crap," please!?!?! I really don't think that's the least bit offensive -- "s***" certainly is, but "crap" is not...

If it is a euphemism, is there a particular ruder word it comes from?

I think 6ля is more common.

We say it another way жизнь дерьмо (or говно).

Are "дерьмо" and "говно" simply synonyms or do they tend to be used differently? Is one encountered more frequently? And finally, the stress lies like this, right: дерьмо and говно?

Synonyms. Говно is more rude. The same frequency I guess. Stress is right.

Sure. Personally I can say дерьмо in public like at the office for instance but I avoid saying говно in public places.
