Why all the extra и s

I don't understand why и is in these sentances

    (from living language)

вот мы и приехали = we and arrived?

она сказала что придет(I dont know how to make the unlaut) так и не пришла

Can someone explain the extra ands is these sentances or tell me where to look it up?

    Thanks

Those и's don't really mean 'and', they're particles used for emphasis. You can't realy translate them directly though, since the meaning depends on context.

мы приехали - is simply - We arrived/ we've arrived.

вот мы и приехали - could mean - Well there now, we've arrived at last! , expressing exasperation (It could have other nuances too of course, depending on how it was said)

"Она так и не пришла" can be translated as "She never came"

"и" can also be used to mean:

    1. (именно) that is what, that is where, that is who
здесь он и жил — it was here that he lived
вот об этом-то он и думает — that is what he is thinking of
этого человека они и ждали — that is the man they have been waiting for

    2. used in subjunctive mood
он и пошёл бы, да не может - he would like to go but he can't

    3. (даже) even
он и спасибо не сказал — he did not even say thank you
