Tips on Mastering Verbs of Motion

    Those pesky motion verbs!

What techniques should one employ when attacking VoM?

What are your personal experiences in successfully and/or unsuccessfully learning motion verbs, prefixed and unprefixed?

    40 years, still struggling.
    For starters:
    Г.Л. Скворцова, «Глаголы движения -- без ошибок». Москва, Русский язык, 2003г.
    Л.С. Муравьёва, «Глаголы движения». 8-ое изд. Москва, Русский язык, 2001г.

    Летом я ездил в Ирландию.
    Летом я съездил в Ирландию.
No idea what the difference might be. :-^(

Есть ресурсы по-английски по этому вопросу?

This specific example is not just about the verbs of motion. It relates to the concept of perfective/imperfective verbs in general.

It is the same as if you compared the phrases like

    Вчера я говорил с другом.
    Вчера я поговорил с другом.

There's no motion in my examples, but the idea is the same.

Technically, both options are valid in your example and in mine. But they have some slight nuances.
Ask native speakers, "What is the difference?", and they would hardly provide an answer.

However, in your example (and in mine) the imperfective is used when there was no expectation from the listener's side that you would do it:
"Летом я ездил в Ирландию." - you say it to inform the listener about something new, unknown to him/her.
The same is for "Вчера я говорил с другом."

"Летом я съездил в Ирландию." - It is more suitable when you were expected to visit Ireland. The listener knows you were planning to go there. And you notify him/her you have successfully performed your plan.
The same is for "Вчера я поговорил с другом." - it was already expected you had to talk to your friend about something.

Это несовершенный вид в общефактическом значении. Он конкурирует с совершенным.

Muravyova's book is in English, with many, many examples and exercises.

This looks something like the difference between "Were you visiting Ireland?" and "Did you visit Ireland?" "Were you speaking with your friend?" and "Did you speak with your friend?"

Related to the "have you...?" and "did you...?" points on the other thread.

Suppose, at the end of the year you are reminiscing about how it went. If you are focusing on how you spent your time it is marginally better to use the first option. If you are focusing on your achievements, it is marginally better to use the second. But it is no big deal, in this particular case.

Я думаю, что у многих русскоязычных такие же трудности с употреблением Present Perfect/Simple Past, как и у студентов русского - с сов./несов. видами глаголов.

Может кто-нибудь привести рекомендации по преодолению этих трудностей для учащих английский? Может быть есть какие-то способы аккомодации конструкции к русским конструкциям? Например, трансформация: I have read this book -> "Я поимел прочитанной эту книгу" не вредна ли методически для далнейшего изучения? Может есть какие то другие способы?
