    Motion Verbs

    Hi,

I still have some problems understanding the below verbs. Could someone make me a brief explanation about the below sentences? What do they exactly mean? Do I use them correctly? Are there other verbs that I can add to the list? Thanks alot

    ехать/поехать/приехать/уехать/ездить
    идти/поити/прийти/уйти/ходить

    куда ты ехал?
    куда ты поехал?
    откуда ты приехал сюда.
    куда ты уехал?
    куда ты ездил?
    куда ты шёл?
    куда ты пошёл?
    куда ты ушёл?
    куда ты хожу каждый год?

    Hope it helps.
All verbs are in first person, singular form.

There's one form, that doesn't fit this graph: "езжу/хожу". It exists only in singular form and means you do it on regular basis.
For example, you can't say "Где ты сейчас ездишь?", it would be "Где ты сейчас едешь?". You can't say "Обычно я еду домой на автобусе", it would be "Обычно я езжу домой на автобусе".

Normally, you can associate a verb's prefix with English verb's preposition.

    eхать - simply to go
приехать - to arrive (as if to go in)
уехать - to depart (as if to go out)
    etc.

куда ты ехал? - where were you going?
куда ты поехал? - where are/were you going?
откуда ты приехал сюда. - where did you come here from?
куда ты уехал? - where have you gone? (perfect form)
куда ты ездил? - where have you been going?
куда ты шёл? - where were you walking? where did you walk to?
куда ты пошёл? - where are/were you going?
куда ты ушёл? - where have you gone? (actually walked, in Russian to walk and to go by smth can be different verbs, here шёл relates to walking)
куда ты ходишь каждый год? - Where do you walk every year? (a bit weird question), if you meant to ask 'Where do you go every year' you should ask Куда ты ездишь каждый год.

Also, keep in mind, than the English verb 'to go' can be translated into two different verbs:
    * to walk (ходить, идти) - only if you speak about a person.
    * to go by something (a car, a horse, a plane, a train, etc.) (ездить, ехать)

I saw you leaving the house yesterday, where did you go? - Я видел, как ты выходил из дома вчера, куда ты ходил?
They said you barely escaped the police, where did you go? - Мне сказали, ты едва убежал от полиции, куда ты направился?
Your mother said you travelled a lot last year, where did you go? - Твоя мама сказала, что в прошлом году ты много путешествовал, куда ты ездил?
You were flying around that asteroid and disappeared, where did you go? - Ты облетал этот астероид и исчез. Куда ты делся?

куда ты ехал? - where were you going? (talking about a specific direction at a specific time)
куда ты поехал? - (you're not here now) "where have you gone?" or colloquially when you see someone about to go somewhere "where are you going?" or (describing a sequence of past events) "where did you go" or more precisely "where did you set off for"
откуда ты приехал сюда.- (you're here now) where have you/did you come from?
куда ты уехал? - same as куда ты поехал? (the difference is that поехал can mean just starting to move, without necessarily implying a direction, while уехал always implies leaving)
куда ты ездил? - where did you use to go? (talking about habitual movement or to multiple places), also Ramil's example is a good one Я видел, как ты выходил из дома вчера, куда ты ходил? it's like asking "where did you go yesterday" you might have left the house and come back multiple times, visited multiple locations, etc.
    you also forgot
куда ты съездил? which is the perfective of ездил, referring to a single trip there and back. For example if you just got back from holiday, your friend might ask "куда ты съездил?" and you might reply "Я съездил на море."

    Here are my translations:

RIDING IN A VEHICLE OR ON A HORSE, ETC.
куда ты ехал (кодга ты НЛО увидел)? Where were you going at the time when you spotted the UFO?
куда ты поехал? Where are you headed?
откуда ты приехал сюда. From where did you arrive here?
куда ты уехал? Where did you go?
куда ты ездил? Where all have you gone in your travels?
куда ты ездил в отпуск ? Where did you go on your vacation?
куда ты ездишь каждый год? Where do you go to every year?
куда ты едешь сейчас? Where are you going right now?

    GOING ON FOOT
куда ты шёл (кодга ты нашёл мой кошелёк)? Where were you going at the time when you found my wallet?
куда ты пошёл? Where do you intend to go?
куда ты ушёл? Where did you go?
куда ты ходил? What sort of places have you been to?
куда ты ходил вчера? Where did you go yesterday?
куда ты ходишь каждый день? Where do you go every day?
куда ты идёшь сейчас? Where are you going right now?

Note that when you use the non-prefixed "unidirectional/determinate" past-tense forms шёл and ехал, it implies that something else happened en route -- e.g., while you were driving your car somewhere, you saw a flying saucer.

When you use the non-prefixed "multidirectional/indeterminate" past-tense forms ходил and ездил, it implies a round trip (i.e., the person has gone and returned) or several trips.

But in the present tense, the non-prefixed "unidirectional" forms like я иду or я еду don't necessarily imply that another action occurs at the same time -- only that there is a definite destination. я еду на велосипеде в парк is "I am riding my bicycle to the park," for example.

This is in contrast to the present-tense of the non-prefixed "multidirectional" forms я хожу and я езжу, which imply "I often/regularly go..." (Or, in some contexts, they refer to ability: я езжу на велосипеде can mean "I know how to ride a bicycle")

I'm pretty sure that "куда ты ходил?" by itself can be understood as referring to a single trip there and back -- because a round-trip is, by definition, not in one direction only!

But "куда ты сходил/съездил?" serves to emphasize clearly and definitely that there was just ONE trip there and back, avoiding the ambiguity of the non-prefixed form.

    Yes I agree with this.
