Studying the verbs and some possible systematisation I find the following possibilities:
1) None at all. There are in the appendix of my dictionary about 18 different patterns of verbs, everyone with some exceptions and exceptions to the exceptions. With no connection among them.
2) In a grammar I see a list of 15 patterns of verbs, also isolated,
3) In an other grammar I see an attempt rather heroic from the professor as well as for the pupil considering the consonant stems and vocal stems and the interaction between vocal+vocal and consonant+consonant and its effects. Rather laborious, finding finally: "In any case the pupil must learn by heart for each verb infinitiv, present and past". So why work a theoritecal background if finally I should learn by heart every verb? It seems a useless work, isn't it? Being given that my aim is not getting a Master in Russian.
4) Making a kind of "superior syntesis" I have made a list of 8 different groups having in mind the themes of infinitiv, past and present. With only one theme [1-1-1 (чита-ть чита-л чита-ю)], with 2 themes [1-1-2, 1-2-2], with 3 themes [1-2-3 (вес-ти вё-л ве-д-у)]. Since everyone of these groups includes some patterns close but different, it is useful only as a kind of help, but with no more ambition.
I ask: It's so crytical the study of stems or it is just a help ? Thanks
