Thread: A simple question about Plural in Nominative.......

Can I ask a question about plural of masculine(end with consonants) and feminine (end with a)in in Nominative : when we plus -ы and when we plus -и at the ending.....? And Why?? Thanx

It depends on the last letter of the stem (the last letter in masculine and the letter before "а" in feminine)
It's "и" after г, к, ж, ш, щ, х, ч, and "ы" after all the other letters.

Don't forget about hardness and softness - feminine nouns ending with я or ь use и, while those ending in а use ы.

Masculine nouns ending in ль дь вь ть and the like use и - соли [salts (may not be grammatically correct as a translation)] медведи [bears] гости [guests] чёрви [worms]. Note that words ending in a soft sign are usually feminine (case in point - чёрвь is the only masculine word ending in вь). Likewise, masculine nouns ending in й use и in the plural as well (a bit confusing, I know): трамвай --> трамваи.

After г к ж ш щ х ч, always use и, regardless of gender and whether or not there is a soft sign after it (as there sometimes is after ж ш щ ч, but never after г к х)

Also, bear in mind that some masculine words have a stressed a (see point three) instead of ы or и.

соль is feminine

For feminine ending with "а", the last letter of the stem determines the ending in plural (as Friendy said). It's not always ы. For example кошка/кошки, дорога/дороги.
P.S.
To be more precise, it is not the last letter of the stem, it is the last letter before ending (before "а").

What about these plurals?

Спят, спят мышата, спят ежата.
Медвежата, медвежата и ребята.

мышонок -> мышата
ежонок -> ежата
медвежонок -> медвежата
ребёнок -> ребята

They are irregular. Btw, "дети" is also plural from "ребёнок".
