    ли in expressions

I have stumbled upon some phrases using ли where it does not seem to mean 'whether'. For example: Я ли тебя не учил! Or: Мало ли что я тебе сказал.

Can anyone explain what exactly ли does for these expressions, and how to render them in English most closely?

    Re: ли in expressions

Я ли тебя не учил! - Didn't I teach you? (was it not me?)
Мало ли что я тебе сказал! - Who cares [=I don't care anymore] what I told you!

мало ли = it doesn't matter

Thanks. What mood do these expressions convey? For instance, does "Didn't I teach you? (was it not me?)" convey surprise or rather annoyance? Or is it just a genuine question with no special implied emotion?

As for this particular phrase, it depends on context. But it's very unlikely "surprise". It can be a didactic tone, for instance...
Maybe it can canvey surprise, but in this case the stress is not on "was it not me?", but on "how is that you don't know/remember that?"

To tell you the truth, I find it difficult to make this phrase ("Я ли тебя не учил!") flow in real context. I even tried Google - no hits. However, if I were to use it it would be in this kind of context: I spent a lot of time teaching somebody something, perhaps many things over a prolonged time, and now that person doesn't appreciate my effort. That is how I would express my bitterness or, possibly, annoyance. Surprise at such ingratitude would also be possible.

Да, я думаю, что в выражениях с "Я ли" часто звучит обида, горечь, разочарование. Оно также отдаёт стариной.
Вот, например, первое, что выскочило в Яндексе на "Я ли":

"... , нужно также сказать об изданном в 1896 году (за год до написания Ионыча) тексте Н.А.Панова:

    Ночь темна-темнёшенька,
    В доме тишина;
    Я сижу, младёшенька,
    С вечера одна.
    Словно мать желанная
    По сынке родном,
    Плачет неустанная
    Буря под окном.
    До земли рябинушка
    Гнётся и шумит…
    Лучина-лучинушка
    Не ясно горит.

    Затянуть бы звонкую
    Песенку живей,
    Благо, пряжу тонкую
    Прясть мне веселей,
    Да боюся батюшку
    Свекра разбудить
    И свекровь-то матушку,
    Этим огорчить.
    Муженек-детинушка
    Беззаботно спит…
    Лучина-лучинушка
    Не ясно горит.

    Хорошо девицею
    Было распевать,
    Горько молодицею
    Слёзы проливать.
    Отдали несчастную
    В добрую семью,
    Загубили красную
    Молодость мою.
    Мне лиха судьбинушка
    Счастья не сулит…
    Лучина-лучинушка
    Не ясно горит.

    Я ли не примерная
    На селе жена?
    Как собака верная,
    Мужу предана.
    Я ли не охотница
    Жить с людьми в ладу?
    Я ли не работница
    В летнюю страду?
    От работы спинушка
    И теперь болит…
    Лучина-лучинушка
    Не ясно горит.

    Милые родители,
    Свахи и родня!
    Лучше бы мучители
    Извели меня:
    Я тогда не стала бы
    Сетовать на вас,
    Сладко ли вам жалобы
    Слышать каждый раз?
    Ах, тоска-кручинушка
    Сердце тяготит.
    Лучина-лучинушка
    Не ясно горит.

    Re: ли in expressions

    Re: ли in expressions

Вынужден не согласиться кое с чем из сказанного выше.

В вопросе "Я ли тебя не учил?" не ставится под сомнение кто учил. Ставится под сомнение (риторически) сам факт обучения. Этот вопрос означает примерно следующее: "Разве я тебя не учил?"

Вот если бы было "Не я ли тебя учил?", тогда под сомнение ставилось бы кто учил.

    Похожие выражения.

"Я ли ягод не носил? - снова леший голосил"

By the way. It does mean "whether". One can say: "Почему ты так сделал? Или я тебя не учил?"

    В общем, я с Полуношником и Лампадой.

    (Ищу еще примеры.)

Нет, whether там не будет. Whether вводит придаточные предложения. По-английски, наверное, будет просто Didn't I teach you?

Еще в тему (наверное, это не лучшие примеры, но мне кажется, они могут помочь «почувствовать», что значит частица ли в предложениях типа «Я ли тебя не учил?»):
More quotes (perhaps these examples are not the best one can found, but I think they can help "to feel" what the particle "ли" means in sentences like "Я ли тебя не учил?")

    ЛИ; ЛЬ.
    I.
частица (после того сл., к которому относится).
    2. Нар.-поэт.
Выделяет, подчёркивает то слово в предложении, к которому относится.
Я ли за тобой не ухаживал.
Мы ли тебя не холили, не лелеяли.
    http://gramota.ru/slovari/dic/?word=%EB%E8&all=x

"О черствая душа! О бессердечный оруженосец! Я ли не кормил тебя, я ли не осыпал тебя милостями и не намеревался осыпать ими и впредь! Благодаря мне ты стал губернатором, благодаря мне у тебя есть все основания надеяться на получение графского титула или же чего-либо равноценного, и надежды эти сбудутся не позднее, чем через год, ибо post tenebras spero lucem. (Сервантес, Дон Кихот.)"

»O verhärtete Seele du!« rief Don Quijote. »O Schildknappe sonder Mitleid!
    or rather annoyance?
You were close. ) [Without the context] I'd say it's not annoyance, rather bitterness, as Lampada has already written. Perhaps when someone didn't live up to your expectations. Or reproach, as Hemul wrote.

Другой пример (здесь частица относится к глаголу):
Another example (here the particle refers to the verb):

Может ли человек скрыться в тайное место, где Я не видел бы его? говорит Господь. Не наполняю ли Я небо и землю? говорит Господь.
    (Книга Пророка Иеремии 23:24)

KJV: Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

Meinst du, daß sich jemand so heimlich verbergen könne, daß ich ihn nicht sehe? spricht der HERR. Bin ich es nicht, der Himmel und Erde füllt? spricht der HERR.

    Re: ли in expressions

Thank you all for the very enlightening explanations.

Zaya, those are some really weird quotes...

Я ли не кормил тебя ... = Haven't I fed you? (Taking into account all that was said above as to what that intends to imply).
O mein mit Undank gegessenes Brot! = Oh my bread which was eaten without thankfulness.

That's what you get translating from Spanish...

As for this: “Miss Scarlett, Ah done tole you an’ tole you dat you kin allus tell a lady by her han’s an’—yo’ face sunbuhnt too!”

In normal English that would be "Miss Scarlett, I have told you time and again that you can always tell a lady by her hands and - your face is sunburnt, too!"

I know what would be in normal English. ) I just wanted to know what words were "butchered" there. ))
    done <- didn't? have?
    tole <- told? tell?

I know. The German translator just expressed bitterness in another way that the Russian one. ) It's literature, so the translation can be loose. ) I don't know Spanish and didn't post the Spanish quote. Neither did you. ) By the way, can you speak Spanish?
Well, yes, for those who haven't read The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha and Gone with the Wind and know nothing/little about the characters, the quotes may look really strange. (

    Re: ли in expressions

'Done tole' is a kind of alternative grammar, I'm not quite sure where exactly it comes from and which people speak or spoke it; I seem to remember it is connected to African Americans originally. Here it uses 'do' in place of 'have' for the perfect tense and 'tole' is an alternative version of 'told'.

I did mean 'this is what you get translating from Spanish' - I suppose that both are official translations from Spanish, and who knows what the original might have said. I know no Spanish, just enough Latin and fragments of other Romanic languages to make some sense of it if I also get to use a dictionary.

Good thread bitpicker (and everybody who contributed.) Am I catching up with you maybe, Robin? LOL!! (as if!!) But, in fact, I was thinking about asking about this myself.

The usage of ли and also бы is tricky from a Western European perspective..
Deceptively small word, yet important and very common in Russian.
The sentance construction with these words is pretty alien from our perspective.

I think it will fall into place once I start reading.

Что-то вроде "just in case" или "anything can happen".
"Россия для русских" - это неправильно. Остальные-то чем лучше?
