    to sleep

    Hi there,

I'm wondering how to express the following verbs:

    to sleep - спать
to get up (from sleep) - проснуться
to fall asleep (for the reason of being tired)- уснуться?
to fall asleep (out of boredom...kinda) - заснуть?
to oversleep - no idea - пере...? (not willing to use it here - since it appears to have a secondary meaning) - what do you guys use to express this verb?

to fall asleep (out of boredom...kinda) - заснуть? Yes, заснуть is OK.

BTW, I do not think we make any difference between boredom and tiredness. I think both уснуть and заснуть can be used in either case.

to oversleep - no idea - пере...? (not willing to use it here - since it appears to have a secondary meaning) - what do you guys use to express this verb? - the only option is переспать
Note. Переспать is the right verb for oversleeping. But be careful with it: "переспать с кем-то" has another meaning: "to have sex with someone".

Right, that's why I wasn't intending to use it in my initial post.

    Alright then.
    спать / уснуть / заснуть / проснуться / переспать

    Thx

    That works. Another example:

Отоспаться - to sleep well to get rid of tiredness and wooziness you had before sleeping because of lack of sleep
I do not claim that my opinion is absolutely true.

If you mean to sleep so long that you missed something than it is "проспать" - я заснул в автобусе и проспал свою остановку; будильник сломался, и я проспал работу.

Yes, if you just convey the fact that you overslept without specifying for how much time you overslept then you go with проспать.

However, if you tell the exact time for how much you overslept you go with переспать.

For example, I remember times from my childhood when my mother used to wake me up with these words:

Вставай уже, и так уже 20 минут переспал

Let's say for I should have woken up at 7:00 but I had been still sleeping at 7:20. There we see those 20 minites
    impulse and Cumulus like this.

    Thx guys.

отоспаться - to sleep "off" the tiredness
переспать - to oversleep; 1. general, 2. to indicate the amount of minutes overslept (excl. a preposition)
проспать - to oversleep; to specify which event has been "overslept"
заспаться - to oversleep; general (?)

And don't forget выспаться. Я выспался means I have had good sleep of proper duration.

Antonym would be недоспать, as in familiar joke:
    Лучше переесть, чем недоспать!
"Невозможно передать смысл иностранной фразы, не разрушив при этом её первоначальную структуру."

Hm... Frankly speaking I did not know that "проспать" is also "to oversleep" in English. I understood this verb as "переспать" only.
But well, I will remember it, thanks!

Then yes, I agree with other people here:
"переспать" is just to sleep too long, longer than expected.
"проспать" is to miss something due to the failure to wake up in time.

As to "заспаться", I would say it is like "to be too deep in your sleeping so that you deliberately ignore some other activities by considering them less important". It is a common pattern for this group of verbs:
    "заиграться" - to be infatuated with playing so much that you forget other things to do;
    "задуматься" - to be deep in one's thoughts so much that you do not notice something important around;
"зачитаться", "заговориться", "заучиться", "засмотреться", "заслушаться", "замечтаться" all convey similar ideas.
    impulse and Cumulus like this.
