instrumental case used to mean like or similar?

    hi,
Is the instrumental case used to mean like or similar? i've seen this before but here's an example:
Замесили горячий воздух лопасти, одна за другой отрывались машины, и потянулись стайкой прочь

    стайкой- like a small flock?

    spacibo
Кому - нары, кому - Канары.

Well, you pretty much answered yourself. Yes, that's a common practice to use the instrumental case for comparison. That sounds a bit literary.
Please correct my mistakes if you can, especially article usage.
