    Difference between "дарить" and "давать"

Could anyone please explain the difference between the words "дарить" and "давать" ? My dictionary translates both as "to give", but I suppose they aren't exact eqvivalents?

    /Stefan

Дарить means to give something as a gift(often on special occasions).

    Давать - to give
Дарить - to give something as a present or a gift. Подарить что-то на День Рождения, на Новый Год.

So давать is "to give" as in "hand over"? Right?

in many cases yes. But there can be other usage, like "давать уйти" (to let go).

The imperative of давать is translated as "let's", as in "Давай ем пирог" or "Lets eat pie".

If you use a perfective verb, you use the Мы form. If it is an imperfective, you use the infinitive.
EM is the first person (ya) form of the imperfective verb.
Remember Let's in English is short for "Let us"

Давай есть пирог - Let's eat pie
Давай съедим пирог - Let's eat up the pie.

Very often "давать/дать" (apart from the main meaning "to give") is also used colloquially in the meaning of "to lend" or "to pass".

Дай мне тарелку - Pass me the plate, will you.
Дай отвёртку - Lend me a screwdriver.

I got into trouble in the first years in Australia because I used "give" in the meaning of "lend", which can't be done in English.

"(по)дарить" means to give as a gift and explicitly "for good", you never expect it to be returned.

As other users said давай, давайте also means "let's"

Sounds like an expensive error to make.

    Thanks everybody for good explanations!

Well, there are more hidden meanings to давать

    давать/дать маху - to make a mistake
    давать/дать просраться - To defeat
Дать по рукам - To catch someone redhanded

well... those were the uncensored ones I found...

Анекдот в тему. Два еврея, муж и жена. Жена говорит.
    - Дорогой я дала маху.
    - Как этому уроду, нашему соседу? Старому жиду с пятого этажа?
    - Да, нет. Я имею в виду я потеряла 5$.
    - Уж лучше б ты дала Маху.
