Thread: Я сделаю завтрак... приготовлю завтрак? [cooking]

Which is the best way to say this?

There was some debate about this phrase in the thread about "Pimsleur Russian" which said "cделаю завтрак"...

...whereas Olya and Zaya (if I remember right) said that for making/cooking/preparing a meal, it is better to say "приготовить завтрак/обед". It almost seemed like the Pimsleur sentence was incorrect... Can anyone confirm?

How to say:
Tonight I am cooking for the whole family!
Yesterday I made breakfast.
Right I am preparing dinner for my boyfriend.
Tomorrow I will be making lunch for my friends.

Приготовлю is the right/most common way. Сделаю sounds like literal translation from English.

Those Russian people who read the Pimsleur texts should have complained! There are plenty more things in there that Olya and others think are bad!! It's 56 hours of sentences, in total, I think.

Сегодня (вечером) я готовлю на всю семью.

That surprised me a bit. Instead of «на всю семью» could we also say «для всей семьи» in this context?

Yes, we could say "для всей семьи", but usually we say "на всю семью". There isn't a big difference.

Both ways are acceptable. There may be some regional preferences, but "cделаю завтрак" is good and perfectly natural Russian nonetheless. In fact, I personally would rather use "cделаю" than "приготовлю" because it's shorter.

Для меня словосочетание "делать завтрак/обед/ужин" звучит по-чучмекски. Я никогда не слышал, чтобы кто-нибудь так говорил.

Ну и что? Это не аргумент. Никто из моих знакомых никогда не скажет "по-чучмекски". Означает ли это, что это звучит не по-русски? И если "сделают завтрак" употребляется реже, это не значит, что так говорить неправильно. В любом языке есть несколько способов сказать одно и то же.
