Thread: теперь vs. сейчас, and за vs для

So in what situations would I say each one?? It has to do with case, right? But I would think that для and за would both be accusative...

Для takes genitive. За, when it means "for", takes accusative. There is a difference in the meaning of the words, English "for" covers both but Russian uses two words. I can attempt to explain, but I'm a learner, too, and don't always get it right.

Для is used with the target or recipient of something. Эта книга для тебя = this book is for you. It may also establish a personal view or relation: Для меня это не важно = for me that is not important. Furthermore it establishes the purpose of something: этот прибор для того, чтобы... = this device is (meant) for... All these meanings seem to imply some kind of flow or direction, if purpose can be said to have a direction.

За establishes a different kind of connection, more like a handle on something: прости меня за то, что... = forgive me for the fact, that... In this case, "for" acts more like a handle on that which it refers to (for the fact), nothing is changing hands. In платить за билет = pay for the ticket money does change hands, but the money is для подавца билета (for the ticket seller) as recipient, and за билет as the thing which is being paid for.

За may also take instrumental case and can sometimes be translated by "for": идтй в магазин за хлебом = go to the shop for bread, послать за доктором = send for the doctor, in both cases it means "to obtain" (the bread, the doctor).

"За" has one more meaning: "вместо". Заплатить за кого-то - to pay a bill submitted to somebody else.

"Теперь" as opposed to "сейчас" implies some change of a state. The topic has been discussed several times. The most clear (imho) explanation was given by oldboy: "теперь" is used as a conjunction, connecting to sentences. The first sentence is often only implied though.

1) После "теперь" идёт следствие того, что произошло раньше.

Я потерял ключи. Теперь я не могу войти в дом.

"Теперь я не могу войти в дом." - это СЛЕДСТВИЕ.
"Я потерял ключи." - это то, что произошло раньше, это ПРИЧИНА, почему "Теперь я не могу войти в дом."
Т.е., чтобы сказать "Теперь я не могу войти в дом.", перед этим ты должен сказать "Я потерял ключи." Нельзя сказать только:

Теперь я не могу войти в дом.

Перед этим нужно обязательно сказать "Я потерял ключи".

Ещё пример:

Я проспал! Теперь я опоздаю на работу.

Нельзя сказать только:

Теперь я опоздаю на работу.

Перед этим нужно обязательно сказать "Я проспал!"

2) После "сейчас" идёт сообщение о том, что происходит в данный момент.

Сейчас я читаю книгу.

"Сейчас я читаю книгу." - это НЕ следствие, это независимое утверждение, оно используется самостоятельно. Ещё примеры:

Сейчас по телевизору показывают футбол.

Я сейчас занят: я разговариваю по телефону.

From oldboy's post just above, I have created the following mnemonic device (hope it's near accurate):

те / перь /||/ сей / час

such / now /||/ this / hour

I'm mentally picturing "те" as being something like "so" or "up to", giving the whole word a sense like English "and now" or "so now."
And "this hour" clears up сейчас for me. Like "at this time."
