Hello.

Как птицы делают гнездо изо всего, так дети делают куклу из чего придется.

I know the verb прийтись can be used predicatively, and its complement shall be an infinitive verb. Now I don't see any infinitive here, so what's wrong? Could it be that чего might be the subject of the verb, although it is not in nominative case? Shouldn't one say дети делают куклу из того, что придётся ?

The verb has more than one meaning.

Спит когда придётся.

The fourth meaning is the one you know, but in your sentence this verb is used in the sixth meaning.

из чего придется ≈ from everything they can find, from everything they can see

"из того, что есть/имеется" or "из чего придется" but never "из того, что придётся" such construction can be used only as "исходя из того, что придётся", "ввиду того, что придётся".

I don’t think you’ve made life easier for Zubr by your "исходя из того, что придётся", "ввиду того, что придётся". Did you mean something like «исходя из того, что придётся подвергать смертельному риску команду корабля, мы решили отказаться от этой затеи»?

Ok now I understand what it means but the grammar remains unclear.

Or maybe you can't even use it in past form? That would be very frustrating.

что придётся, что попадётся (also "что ни попадётся", "что ни пОпадя"), что получится, что случится, что выйдет...(in all objective cases). All of these are accepted phrases which mean more or less the same and are used exactly like that. They are a bit colloquial. Maybe grammatically "то, что придётся" is more logical but it is unnatural.

It's like: "from whatever's on hand" and "from whatever, which is on hand".

на ком пришлось is OK. Even present is OK: "Я женюсь на ком приходится."

There are also phrases
"Мне пришлось жениться на ней." - "I had to marry her."
"У меня получилось/вышло жениться на ней." - "I managed to marry her."
"Мне случилось жениться на ней." - "I happened to marry her."
