Thread: налево vs слева

Hi everyone,

Could someone please clarify for me the difference in meaning / usage of налево versus слева. My dictionaries list both as "to the left; on the left". Is there any practical difference in usage though? Are they interchangeable or are there subtle differences in meaning?

налево implies towards the left side
слева implies from the left side

The literal translation is: "слева" = "from left", "налево"="to left". When speaking about motion, the translation is like that. But when describing immobile objects both can mean the same. It is a problem of speaker's imagination.

One can say: "cлева от меня было дерево" or "налево от меня было дерево". Both mean: "there was a tree on the left of me".

But I think in this sense "слева" is used more often.

"Налево" - указывает направление (движения) и используется с глаголами действия.
Иди прямо, потом поверни налево.
Посмотрите налево и увидите Белый дом.
Указатель на дороге "Поворот налево". Он сообщает о том, что надо будет повернуть налево.

"Слева" - указывает положение чего-то или кого-то относительно чего-то или кого-то и используется с глаголами состояния. После этого слова идёт предлог "от" (т.е. слева от...).
Слева от вас находится/стоит Белый дом.
На фотографии: я стою слева от правого края.
