    какой или который

I bought a train ticket at the kassa and I wanted to ask the ticket agent which platform the train leaves from. What do I say?

    A. какой платформ отходит поезд?
    B. который платформ отходит поезд?
    C. something else
    Я взял палку и нож, мелки и бумагу и направился к холмам.

If it was me, I'd go with, "A".

В разговорной речи можно услышать: "С которой платформы отходит поезд". Правильно - с какой.

Is it the case that какой is gradually taking over the role of который in many contexts?

I ask because I've noticed that in older books, like from the 1st half of the 20th century and earlier, который is used in many places where I would expect to hear какой in a conversation, even though который seems to make more sense according to their respective dictionary definitions.

I asked Mrs Scotcher this just last week actually, but she didn't know.

Well the only way I've been taught is that который is the relative pronoun. I think the confusion lies in the fact that in English we say 'which' for both какой and который.

Although I see what you mean because when you ask what the time is you say:

Который час? but logically according to modern usage it should be Какой час?

    No.
The logic is a choice from the range of numerals (from 1 to 12) and therefore it's plural "который" accordingly
"Все" и "Сразу" это "Ничего" и "Никогда"

What do you mean 'plural'? There is no plural here.

Yes... It's not quite correctly. I meant that "который" like "which" i.e. the choice between of several things (in this case)

Platform in Russian is a feminine noun: платформа

    Какая платформа - nominative.
    C какой платформы - genitive

I'm sure it can be. But people usually say "с какой платформы". And you should do so if you want your question to sound more natural.

Поезд - не самолет, он не взлетает с полосы, а отходит ОТ платформы.

Но тем не менее так говорят (с какой платформы).
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.
