Доброй ночи и ночь... the difference?

As in America, I'm sure it's common for friends in Russia to tell each other good night in less formal terms. I'm almost sure I heard my friend say "ночь" one night as opposed to spokoinoi nochi or dobriy nochi. This would be like saying "night" as a less formal way of saying "good night". Is this correct and would it be said "ночь" or "ночи"? I'm a beginner.

Mmm, I've never heard anything like that. I think, I'd find it rather weird, if a person said just "ночь" to me.

On the other hand people are often mumbling the polite phrases like that, so "спокойной ночи" sounds sometimes like "спкночь" (with the stress on the "ночь", whilel the previous сonsonants are pretty much mushed). Could it be the case?

I've never heard people saying "ночь", but in effect it's more correct "ночи" grammatically.

Just like the other two posters, I have never heard anyone use "ночь/ночи" instead of "спокойной ночи." How long has your friend lived in America? Perhaps his/her Russian is beginning to be affected by English s/he hears around him.

I think you nailed it. I knew I heard "ночь" and not "ночи". Given the circumstances, I'd say you are probably right. They were mumbling the phrase, but in a way which indicated this was normal to them. Thanks.

Once again, I can only confirm that no one in Russia says "ночь" or even "ночи" but "Спокойной ночи!"; "Покойной ночи!"; "Доброй ночи!"

I don't think people would use доброй ночи in that context unless they were describing a pleasant night in general.

If you wanted to greet someone with a "good night" you'd use Добрый вечер and then спокойной ночи when you left, slept, whatever.
Вот это да, я так люблю себя. И сегодня я люблю себя, ещё больше чем вчера, а завтра я буду любить себя to ещё больше чем сегодня. Тем что происходит,я вполне доволен!

Nevertheless people do use "доброй ночи" in the same sense as "спокойной ночи".
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

It's not wrong to say just "ночи" in the meaning of "спокойной ночи"

    Huh.. It's weird. AND objectionable.
But whatever... Probably some people somewhere talk like that. I've just never met them.

Так говорят только поклонники Макса Фрая. "Хорошей ночи, сэр Джуффин!"
