I really like the following monologue from "The Swan Song" by Chekov:

Светловидов. Когда был молодым актером, когда только что начинал в самый пыл входить, помню — полюбила одна меня за мою игру... Изящна, стройна, как тополь, молода, невинна, чиста и пламенна, как летняя заря! Под взглядом ее голубых глаз, при ее чудной улыбке, не могла бы устоять никакая ночь. Морские волны разбиваются о камни, но о волны ее кудрей разбивались утесы, льдины, снеговые глыбы! Помню, стою я перед нею, как сейчас перед тобою... Прекрасна была в этот раз, как никогда, глядела на меня так, что не забыть мне этого взгляда даже в могиле... Ласка, бархат, глубина, блеск молодости! Упоенный, счастливый, падаю перед нею на колени, прошу счастья... (Продолжает упавшим голосом.) А она... она говорит: оставьте сцену! Ос-тавь-те сце-ну!.. Понимаешь? Она могла любить актера, но быть его женой — никогда! Помню, в тот день играл я... Роль была подлая, шутовская... Я играл и чувствовал, как открываются мои глаза... Понял я тогда, что никакого святого искусства нет, что всё бред и обман, что я — раб, игрушка чужой праздности, шут, фигляр! Понял я тогда публику! С тех пор не верил я ни аплодисментам, ни венкам, ни восторгам... Да, Никитушка! Он аплодирует мне, покупает за целковый мою фотогра-фию, но я чужд ему, я для него — грязь, почти кокотка!.. Ради тщеславия он ищет знакомства со мною, но не унизит себя до того, чтобы отдать мне в жены свою сестру, дочь... Не верю я ему! (Опускается на табурет.) Не верю!

My question is:
What is this statement doing in the middle of this monologue?

Морские волны разбиваются о камни, но о волны ее кудрей разбивались утесы, льдины, снеговые глыбы!

It seems out of place. The sea crashes agains the rocks and the rocks are scarred by the waves, Ice and snow blocks? Maybe Светловидов ( Light catcher? ) is just too drunk, Anyway, does anybody know where I can get an audio of this monologue?


Another question: What does (КАЛХАС) mean? I have not been able to find it in a dictionary.

Coming across stones sea waves were crashed but rocks, ice and snow blocks were crashed coming across her curls. It's a lyric.

1. This phrase which astonishes you is not a nonsense. Tchekov compares a girl (her stature, eyes, hair) with nature. Изящна, стройна, как тополь it's her figure, Под взглядом ее голубых глаз, при ее чудной улыбке, не могла бы устоять никакая ночь-it's about her eyes and smile , Морские волны разбиваются о камни, но о волны ее кудрей разбивались утесы, льдины, снеговые глыбы-it's how he sees her hair (it means that she had hair with big curls).
2. КАЛХАС seems to be an abbrevation, it's better to see the context, maybe you'll find a hint in the text.

To interpret certain writers to foreigners is quite a challenge. There are authors out there whom ('whom' sounds more
elegant than 'who') you can translate word for word and the translation does not lose anything. In fact very often it
seems to be better than the original. On the other hand, there are writers who play with words, use obsolete vocabulary
and nonstandard grammar (Chekhov is one of them. Solzhenitsyn is another example).
To fully grasp the meaning of the quoted excerpt you have to bear in mind the fact that Anton Pavlovich had a
well known penchant for pretty young girls and good champagne. What he was trying to say in his own inimitable way
was that the girl was nice and her beautiful hair was quite an asset. Correct me if I am right, but there must be a
medical term for this sort of infatuation with the female capital growth.

Thank you for your input . This is a great monologue with which any aging actor.. ,or human being ( man?) in general , can identify with.
The translation I have seen in Englifh leaves this sentence out:
Морские волны разбиваются о камни, но о волны ее кудрей разбивались утесы, льдины, снеговые глыбы!
my attempt at translating it:
The sea waves smash on the rocks, but her curls smashed the rocks, ice blocks, snow blocks!

It does not really work in English, especially after the litany of concrete, heart felt remembered compliments he enuciates preceding it:
"
Изящна, стройна, как тополь, молода, невинна, чиста и пламенна, как летняя заря! Под взглядом ее голубых глаз, при ее чудной улыбке, не могла бы устоять никакая ночь. " and then... ".Морские волны разбиваются о камни, но о волны ее кудрей разбивались утесы, льдины, снеговые глыбы!"
And then he goes back less metaphorical again:
" Помню, стою я перед нею, как сейчас перед тобою... Прекрасна была в этот раз, как никогда, глядела на меня так, что не забыть мне этого взгляда даже в могиле.."


Maybe he was thinking about supergirl .

I will see what they did in the Spanish translation or the German for that matter. In the english one I saw, they just left it out.
I am still trying to understand the metaphor.
