Thread: жестоко

In an exercise I see:
Если вы не сделаете домашнее задание, вы об этом жестоко пожалеете.

That I translate: If you don't do your home work, you will regret it deeply.
But жестоко is in the dictionary as "with cruelty; with violence" and so. Perhaps my translation is not the better.

If you don't do your homework things may get cruel on you.

But I'd sticked to 'regret deeply' - it's more natural and the word 'жестоко' is just a figure of speech.

One can also say "вы об этом горько пожалеете"
горько=bitterly

жестоко пожалеете - намёк на то, что ждёт жестокое наказание.
Вообще-то говоря, словосочетание составлено с сознательным нарушением смысла для усиления намёка на жёсткость последствий. Но это общепринятое словосочетание.



горько пожалеете - намёк на то, что будете горько плакать.

Both your translation and Charlestonian's are fine.
