What type of liquor is this?

It is a rather large bottle, possibly litre. It has this symbol: 0,8 followed by an upside down small "V" Is this the size?
The label has this name: Cobetckoe and just under that, N(backwards) L - (upside down)P - N (backwards)CTOE. So if I write it with english it reads Nlpnctoe.
Before I open it I'd like to know what it is. My feeling is that it's champagne.
    Thanks for any help
    Eddie

Советское? If it ends in OE it most likely is champaign. When i was in germany i bought some Крымское champaign.

OK, I guess it must be champagne. Now, is it any good? I don't know anything about Russian wines. I do know, however, that they make good vodka. Just got two one-litre bottles of Stoli at duty-free shop on board cruise ship last month.
Thank you both for your help

I asked this russian girl (when i was in germany) if it was any good or if she had tried it. She said that it made her stomach hurt... but champaign is bubbly so what can you expect.

Советское (pronounced something like "savyetskaye", stressed on the second syllable) is kind of a 'bog standard' champagne in Russia, it's certainly nothing special, and, like most East European wines, a little too sweet for most Westerners' tastes. Nothing wrong with it. Except in my experience you'd better be careful when you pop the cork!

That upside V, means L as in litres. so 0.8 litres is the size

I might be in a minority (I am always in a minority), but I for one love sovetskoe! It really depends on the type, because there are many different types. Polusladkoe (half-sweet) is my favorite. But then again, I do not like western champagne because they are too bitter. I like sweet chamagne...

So taste is like the behind, it's divided.

Don't confuse "шампанское" with "игристое вино". Сarbonic acid in the first one is produced by a natural process (secondary fermentation) whereas the latter is just aerated.

I used to love semi-sweet Советское Шампанское and at first all local wines ( including champagne ) that I tried in California were too dry to my taste.
But gradually my preferences have been changed and now californian brut champagne tastes ok to me but Советское is way too sweet on the other hand. A paradox?

Aye, Mrs Scotcher can hardly find a wine sweet enough in the UK for her palate, and I struggle to find one over there dry enough for mine.
