astronomer just recollected an old joke:

    - Do you know why half a litre ("пол-литра") is spelled as separate words, and half-bottle ("полбутылки") as one word?
    - /'I forgot the answer'/ (i.e. astronomer doesn't remember how this joke ends)

    And actually "пол-литра" is hyphenated.

Now I'm curious what the answer is supposed to be in this joke. Does anybody know?

I can share the grammar rule, though:

"Пол-" (a half - from "половина") in compound words is spelled:

HYPHENATED, if the next letter is
    3) capital -
*Exception - word "поллитровка" (half-litre bottle)

AS ONE WORD, if the next letter is consonant (except "л"):

Wellll you should have. Because it was so incredibly obvious s/he was talking about that Taty song (and even if s/he wasn't), look what sort of useful discussion has come from it?

I guess you just gotta choose your battles matey.
