В 1247-1248 годах Андрей вместе с Александром Невским ездил в Орду к Батыю, а оттуда в Монголию за ярлыком на княжение. Раздел между Ярославичами не был мирным. Татищев пишет, что Александр с Андреем имели в Орде большой спор, кому быть во Владимире, кому - в Киеве, и хан отдал Киев Александру, а Владимир - Андрею, основываясь будто бы на завещании их отца Ярослава Всеволодовича.
Андрей отправился во Владимир и спокойно княжил здесь два года. Как можно судить из путаных сообщений летописи, Андрей имел душу благородную, но ум ветреный. Прямое угодничество старшего брата перед ханом, кажется, оскорбляло и возмущало его. Он готовился выступить против Орды, собирал полки, неисправно платил дань и выказывал другие признаки неповиновения татарам. За все эти провинности хан Сартак отправил на Русь новое войско во главе с Неврюем. Tatishev writes that Alexander and Andrew had a severe argument in the Horde on who will rule in Vladimir and who in Kiev and the Khan gave Kiev to Alexander and Vladimir - to Andrew allegedly basing his decision on the supposedly existing will of their father Yaroslav Vsevolodovich.
Andrew went to Vladimir and ruled there peacefully for two years. As we could judge from the confusing chronicle records, Andrew had a noble soul but flighty mind. An open servility of his brother before the Khan troubled him. He prepared to go against the Horde, gathered regiments, paid tributes irregularly, and showed other signs of disobedience before the Tartars. All this offence has made Khan Sartak to send a new army against Russia under the command of Newruy. Nevsky himself contributed to it as well when he went to meet Sartak near the Don river in 1252 to complain about his brother and to ask a Grand Duchy of Vladimir for himself. Alexander got precedence and the hordes of the Tartars invaded the Suzdal land. Andrew, having heard of it said: "Oh my Lord, what is it! For how long will we continue to quarell with each other and send the Tartars against each other, I'd better flee to the foreigh land than to make friends with the Tartars and serve them. Having gathered the army he went against Newruy but has been defeated near Pereyaslavl and then fled to Novgorod. The citizens of Novgorod, though, rejected him and he went to Sweden, where he was accepted as the enemy of Alexander. According Tatishev, some time later he had returned to Russia, made peace with Alexander and went to rule his Suzdal. Later, Alexander had reconciled Andrew with Sartak and they came together to the Horde in 1257 and then to Novgorod with some Tartar tax collectors (переписчики). Tatishev writes that after Alexander's death Andrew wanted to occupy the Grand Duke's throne, but Khan Berke gave a permission to rule to his brother Yaroslav III. Anyway, Andrew outlived his brother only by several months.
