Thread: Translation English-->Russian... Please help!

Hi all! I've been writing a short fiction story, and some of the dialog is in Russian. I've been reading up on as many Russian-language resources as I can, but I need a quick translation for a few very short, informal monologues, and I really want it to be grammatically correct. I know this might not be customary, but I really would appreciate the help (Russian speakers are awfully hard to come by where I live)!

This phrase is when the main character, Lana, is listening to her grandmother speaking to Lana's mother (Vera).
Grandmother: "She gets to go back home, and she's complaining! I won't listen to it, Vera."

These phrases are later, when Vera visits her mother (Lana's grandmother), and talks to her about Robbie, her husband.
Grandmother: "Where is Robbie tonight?"
Vera: "Good question. I can't believe him. He doesn't... I understand that coming to see you with me is hard, tense, whatever, but she is leaving tomorrow! She's going to leave for six months! And he just waves her away like it's no big deal. She's Robbie's only daughter. I don't know what to say to that, that kind of... disinterest. Apathy."
Grandmother: "But he cares so much... for you and for her. He learned Russian for you. He speaks it so well. And he dotes on that girl."
Vera: "Yeah, but that’s not everything. And, well, Svetlana... I worry for her. I’m sorry that she’s caught in the middle, but if she stays I won’t be able to handle any of this. Until August should be long enough for Robbie and I to figure it out. We’re both trying, but whether or not we’ll get a divorce… it’s impossible to tell."

Who is Svetlana? Robbie’s new girlfriend?

Yes, Lana is going to Russia. Her parents are Robbie and Vera (who are sending her there, against her will). Lana is school-age, around 12 or 13. Thanks for your reply

Grandmother won't listen to Lana complaining or to Vera's previous phrase in the dialog?

"I can't believe him" - is it 'I can't believe my eyes" or "i don't believe him" or "i don't trust him" ?
"Where is Robbie tonight?" - what does it mean?

Yes, she can’t believe him in what way? Did he forged some lame excuse to not come with her to her mother, his mother in law, whom he does not very much like, or she does not trust him anymore because their relationship is at the point of breaking down?

Вера: «Хороший вопрос. Я не могу ему верить. Он не … Я понимаю, что заехать вместе со мной к тебе ему тяжело, напряг и всё такое, но она уезжает завтра! Уезжает на шесть месяцев! А он махнул рукой, как ни в чём не бывало. Она его единственная дочь. Не знаю как так можно, такое …равнодушие, безразличие.
Бабушка: «Но он так сильно заботится… о тебе и о ней. Ради тебя он выучил русский. Как хорошо он на нём говорит. И в этой девочке он души не чает».

Who that girl is? Is it Lana, Svetlana or somebody else? Who the **** is Svetlana?
Вера: «Да, но это ещё не всё. Светлана ... Я беспокоюсь за неё. Мне жаль, что она между двух огней. Но если она останется, я не смогу справиться со всем этим. До Августа достаточно времени, чтобы мы с Робби смогли всё решить. Мы вместе пытаемся, но получим ли мы развод или нет - невозможно знать заранее».

When Lana's mother says "I can't believe him", it means more like "I can't believe he did that" or "I can't believe that's who he is now"-- in an exasperated way. Like if a friend stood you up at a movie, you might say "I can't believe her."

vox05: Grandmother won't listen to Lana's complaining that she has to go to Russia; "Where is Robbie tonight?" just means he usually comes to visit Grandmother with Vera, and tonight he's not there.

alexB: The "that girl" is Lana, yeah, because 'Svetlana' and 'Lana' are the same person-- Lana is a nickname. Sorry for the confusion! Thanks for wading through my bad descriptions.
