Добиться успеха можно только, если твое желание будет таким же сильным, как и желание жить.

P.S. I didn's say желание дышать because it's not желание, it's необходимость. At least in Russian.
I do not claim that my opinion is absolutely true.

Well... I mean... It's "need to breathe" in every language technically... Can you really not say "desire to breathe" even if it's for the sake of metaphor or anything?

The thing is breathing is something you do unconsciously. You don't need to control it or focus on it. You just do it or more precisely your body does it for you. Желание is a conscious desire to do something.

However, I suppose you can say желание дышать if you really want to. But you know that might mean something really different. Like, for example, you've been oppressed and you want to break free, here's when you can say желание дышать or хочу дышать etc. There is also a set-phrase дышать полной грудью, which means pretty much what I just described.

I doubt there is "only"-meaning in the original sentence. It changes a lot.
I see no problem in almost direct translation:
"Когда ты хочешь добиться своего так же сильно как (хочешь) дышать - ты своего добьёшься."
I agree that "wish to breathe" has some problems with suitability, but again, I think it is true for original phrase too. And imho, "wish to live" sounds too strong.
So, If we talk about "most accurate" translation, I whould recommend variant above.

    P.S.

Haha. This phrase has context, and this context removes all problems with "breathe".
Indeed: Эрик Томас: Секреты успеха. Полная версия. Перевод видео. | Motivate BIZ

    P.P.S.
(and now I recommend translation above, it sounds better than mine)

Если хочешь дышать, держись подальше от гуру и у тебя всё получится.
