Thread: Songs and poetry?

What is it with all this learning of songs and poetry and Russians? Do all Russians really "dig" poetry or something? I hate poetry. I have these two Russian teachers always bringing poems to me and wanting me to learn them. I'm going nuts, I'd rather read a medical manual. Now I have been given a song by ДДТ to translate. I hate them too! But....I suppose they are better than Yani or Michael Bolton.

There's a time and a place for poetry, surely. I doubt Shakespeare's plays would have the same power if they were written in straight prose, for example, and I can happily sit and read Burns. On the other hand, I was made to read a whole load of English poetry at school that just turned me off completely, I simply couldn't see the point in it.
