    Simple translation questions

I am new at this, but would like to learn some basic phrases.

    1) Hello, how are you?
    2) Good bye for now.
    3) I will keep in touch.

    Does "pokah" mean "good bye"

    Thank you

    Привет, как дела?
    Privet, kak dela?
    Hello, how are you?

    До свидания, пока.
    Do svidaniya, paka
    Good bye, see ya later.

    Я буду держать в контакте.
    Ya budu derzhat v contacte
I will keep in touch. (I am guessing on this one)

    Пока = See ya later.

I don't think that "пока" means "good bye" here. This word also means the present moment sometimes.

    I will keep in touch.
It would be better to say:

Я буду на связи (Ya budu na svyazi)
    or
Я буду поддерживать контакт (Ya budu poddyerzhivat kontakt)

"Пока" is also equals to "so long".

If you want to learn basic phrases, find a tourist book, there are lots of them.

But as you have probably noted, you can't pronounce the Russian words from kwatts' post because he did not indicate where the stress/accent falls or how the vowels and consonants are pronounced.

What he wrote as "privet" does not sound at all like English "private" or "privet" as in "privet hedge." Go down to your local store and buy a book preferably one with an audio CD or tape!!!

Russian people do not say this way. Even not clear what do you mean.

There is no equal/direct menaing to "keep in touch" in Russian. The closest are "Не пропадай" или "Не теряйся" (Don't hide yourself away), "Я позвоню" (I'll call to you [some day]). "Контакт" is more formal term uses in police or lawyer reports .

Really I have no idea how to say in Russian the same short way "I'll keep in touch" with the same meaning. Russian should say more specific all the ways of these "touchs" - to make a call, to write a letter or e-mail and so on. - "Я позвоню", "Я напишу", "Я появлюсь в ICQ" .

Really interesting question - what else about "I'll keep in touch" in Russian? I'm native Russian have no ideas .

ППКС (подпишусь под каждым словом). Английский в отдельных случаях случаях несколько более ёмкий, чем русский.

It means "I keep you informed". The closest would be probably "Свяжемся"
