I'm a native too but I don't think it's fine. Let's ask someone else, shall we? I'll go and ask my sister what she thinks of this phrase. Then I'll come and tell you what said, ok?

    The correct way will be:

И он такой: "Где моя жена?"

    Basically, it's ok.

Yeah, without "был" it's just fine. That expression is mostly used when you're telling a story. I think it used to be more common till several years ago "типа" started to use all the places. Я типа зашёл на masterrussian, и вижу типа разговор про "такой", я думаю чё типа за слово такое, а оказалось что это типа "типа".

Before (or after) the short form of an adjective you should use 'так' and before/after the long one 'такой/ая/ое'.

I got it now! It really looked very odd to me before removing 'был'.

Я типа не понял вначале, когда тока увидел это странное выражение. А потом типа: Точняк! Всё верно, тока "был" нужно убрать!

Your Russian sentence is akward I'd say
    "И я типа: Какого чёрта?"
be like is slang, isn't it?
Да, "like" это слово-паразит, популярное у подростков. Употребляется так же как и "типа" в "А я типа: ..." Очень раздражает. Мой сын при мне его не говорит.

I first heard this phrase on Cartoon Network. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of that cartoon It doesn't matter. I remember the boy (in the cartoon) saying:
    -And she was like...
    -And I was like...
