Najdi Menya 1991 - Special New Year's eve performances by Igor Azarov (songwriter, pianist, vocalist) and Deborah Armstrong (vocalist for first song)

It was a great honor to sing on Russian television. This old video brings back many wonderful memories as well as a funny story:

To record "Another Woman," Igor told me I would need to go to a Soviet Army base, so that we could use the recording equipment belonging to the Red Army Choir. When we arrived at the base, he told me to not speak a word, not even in Russian, because they would know I was American, and even during "Glasnost" - Americans were not really allowed onto Soviet Army bases! We got past the guards with no problem, and once on the base, I was allowed to wander off on my own. As I returned from a walk around the base, I heard Igor talking with his friend - the Soviet Army officer, who had given him permission to do the recording there. The officer asked, "Who is she?" And Igor answered, "Oh, she's an American singer." And the officer said, "WHAT???" But we didn't get into ay trouble, because after all, he gave us permission to be there! The recording took nine hours, using old reel-to-reel equipment, and for the television production I had to lip-sink.

Найди меня, 1991. Специальное новогоднее выступление Игоря Азарова (автор песни, пианист, вокалист) и Деборы Армстронг (исполнительница первой песни)
Петь для российского телевидения было огромной честью для меня. Это старое видео пробуждает не только множество замечательных воспоминаний, а также и напоминает об одной весёлой истории:
Для того чтобы записать песню "Another Woman", Игорь сказал, что мне нужно отправиться в воинскую часть Советской Армии, чтобы использовать оборудование для съёмки и звукозаписи, принадлежащее хору красной армии. Когда мы добрались до части, он сказал мне: «Ни единого слова! Даже по-русски», - потому что если бы я заговорила, то все вокруг сразу бы поняли, что я американка. Ведь, даже во времена «Гласности», американцам было запрещено находиться на территории советских военных частей! Мы без проблем прошли мимо охранников, и когда я оказалась в части, мне было позволено прогуляться по её территории без чьего либо контроля со стороны. Вернувшись с прогулки, я услышала разговор Игоря с одним из его друзей – офицером советской армии, давшим добро Игорю на съёмку и запись. Офицер спросил: «Кто она?», Игорь ответил: «Да это американская певица», тогда офицер воскликнул: «ЧТО?». Но всё закончилось без проблем, так как офицер, в конце концов, разрешил нам сделать то, зачем мы сюда пришли! Мы использовали старые катушечные приборы для записи, и нам потребовалось 9 часов, чтобы закончить работу. А для того, чтобы сделать видео для телевидения, мне пришлось подгонять звуковую дорожку под движение губ на записи.

Yes, that is me during Soviet times I lived in Leningrad for two years and the coup and collapse of the USSR all happened while I was there. Coincidence.....? LOL

I am the little detective aren't I??? I must say you are the picture of the time period, your HAIR!! It is too funny as my daughters had to dress up like the 80's for something and I did their hair almost exactly like yours. And my dear, you sing marvelous, simply marvelous! You have a lot of chutzpah going there to make the recording or maybe it was just your age at the time and not realizing the dangers. What a story and the tape to prove it!

Yeah, I had the Big Hair going on LOL! And thank you for the compliment.

I think it was a little of both... chutzpah and not realizing the dangers. I never felt like I was in danger in the USSR, even during the military coup when Bush Sr. advised all Americans to leave the country. I was supposed to stay in my apartment, but instead I went out into the streets and protested along with the Russians. It was really a fascinating time and I feel honored that I was there to witness such massive change.
