In a Russian-language movie from 1966 (Vertical / Вертикаль) during the credits is this text:

I can puzzle out most Cyrillic given enough time, but as this is cursive, other than "film" (I think :) ) and "CCCP" of course, I am completely lost.

I loooved the film when I was a kid. It might be I would now if I had a shot at watching it. But I don’t want to be disappointed so let the old good memories live on in my mind.

The movie's English subtitles translate it as:
But nobody perishes for nothing.
It relieves vodka and chills.
When I run it though Google translate I get:
But no - no one dies in vain,
So - better than vodka and colds.
The first line is fine, but the second doesn't make much sense. It sounds like a saying/adage and of course they don't translate well. If I was going to make an adage out of it, I would make it "Death relieves more chills than vodka." but I doubt it means that. :)
I guess that second line means that dignified death (e.g., by hazardous environment) is better than death by vodka and colds.
It means literally "This (way) is better, than (to die) of vodka and of cold", so Exciter's explanation is correct.Quote:

English subtitles are misleading in this case.
