Defamation is a statement that injures a third party's reputation. The tort of defamation includes both libel (written statements) and slander (spoken statements).

Both libel and slander in russian are translated exclusively as: клевета? No two words as in English?

Насколько я знаю, такого разграничения (written vs spoken) нет.

В русском есть слово диффамация. Согласно википедии, оно имеет юридический смысл, но лично я никогда не встречал его использование в современном языке. Возможно, оно используется только юристами. Мне оно встречалось в художественной литературе 19-го века, если не ошибаюсь.

There is term "пасквиль" for specific type of written defamation. But it is bookish a little and is narrowed in usage.

The word клевета is sometimes heard in the media without specifying whether it's written or spoken (it can be modified by other words, e.g. клевета в печати, клеветническое заявление, еtc.). The way to find the correct answer is reading the respective article in the respective code.
