And, IMHO, for most russian people Xmas is not a celebration but just one more day-off.

Try saying it faster...then it really sounds prettier than it does in English.

Why exactly is the Russian Orthodox Christmas on January 7th?

I thought that Christmas was to celebrate the birth of Christ, which I've been told is December 25th (I'm not sure if this is documented).

Is it celebrated for a different reason, or do different cultures think that Christ was born on different days?

    I'm just curious

So, as you see it's all the same.

Holly Book did not say when our Lord was born.
First hristians in Rome started celebrate this day by 25 Dec, but they used Julians calendar.
Orthodox and Catholics used it too.
    In this calendar 200, 300, 500, 600, 700, 900, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500, 1700, 1800, 1900 etc are leap years.
In 16th age Catholics take Grigorian (Nowdays) calendar, and this years become non-leap.
So, nowdays Julians and Grigorian calendars depend (lag behind) in a 14 days. In 2100 it will be 15 days, and in 2200 it will be 16 days.
Russia used Julians calendar before Revolution and it was very difficoult to connect whith West.
Lenin took European calendar (it was his seldom good deal), but Orthodox Crush still use old calendar, as first hristians did.
So, we celebrate it 25 Dec too, but... by Julians calendar. This day in modern calendar is 7 Jan. Old New Year is 14 Jan.
